As we reflect on NAIDOC Week, we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and to share resources that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures with the children and families we support. ❤️💛🖤

At EnhanceABILITY, we believe stories are a powerful way to support communication, connection and cultural understanding. We’re proud to incorporate First Nations books and resources into our therapy to encourage learning, spark meaningful conversations and celebrate the rich cultures, histories and languages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Congratulations to Kim Bowen, co-presenting about two papers at the EACD Conference in Galway, Ireland, this week. Kim is a member of the Consumer Leadership Group for the "Listen to Me" Project through Macquarie University.

One presentation is about parents supporting their children with intellectual disabilities to report their experiences in hospital, and the other is about parent and researcher perspectives of this approach. Speech pathologists help to treat people with dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) by:
• completing detailed and accurate assessments
• providing an accurate diagnosis of dysphagia, which may assist with a medical diagnosis
• ensuring safety (reducing or preventing aspiration) with regards to swallowing function
• balancing risk factors with quality of life, taking into account the individual’s preferences
and beliefs
• working with other health professionals, particularly dietitians, to optimise nutrition
and hydration
• stimulating improved swallowing with oral motor/sensory exercises, swallow techniques
and positioning.
