YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM & REGULATION

WHAT WE THINK “REGULATION” IS

• Feeling calm
• Getting rid of anxiety
• Pushing through emotions
• Shutting it down fast

➡️ “I should be fine by now”

✅ WHAT REGULATION ACTUALLY IS

• Staying present with what’s here
• Not abandoning yourself in discomfort
• Increasing emotional capacity
• Allowing signals instead of suppressing them

➡️ “I can stay with this, even if it’s uncomfortable”

🔁 WHAT YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM IS DOING

• Reacting to protect you
• Scanning for threat
• Trying to keep you safe (even if it feels messy)

➡️ Reactions = signals, not failures

TRY THIS (IN THE MOMENT)

Pause for 10 seconds:

1. Drop your shoulders slightly

2. Name what you feel (no fixing)

3. Notice where it sits in your body

➡️ Just noticing = regulation starting

THE SHIFT

From: “Get rid of this feeling”
To: “Can I stay with this and listen?”

Read that again: You worry way too much for someone who always figures it out.

You’ve handled things you once thought would break you.
You’ve figured it out when things didn’t go as planned.
You’ve kept going even when it felt impossible.

Trust yourself. Focus on the things you can control.

You’ve done this before. And you’ll figure it out again. ❤️

Send this to someone who needs this reminder.

The Bondi Beach tragedy has deeply shaken many in our community. Events like this can leave us feeling shocked, unsafe, angry, heartbroken, or numb — even if we were not directly involved.

If you are finding yourself replaying the images, feeling on edge, or struggling to make sense of what happened, please know these are very normal responses to an abnormal and frightening event. Our nervous systems are wired to react strongly when safety is threatened.

In the days ahead, gentle self-care matters. Limit repeated exposure to distressing media, stay connected with supportive people, and allow space for whatever emotions arise without judgement. Children and teenagers may also need extra reassurance and calm presence, even if they don’t have the words for what they’re feeling.

If this event has activated past trauma, anxiety, or a sense of vulnerability, reaching out for professional support can help you feel grounded again. You don’t have to carry this alone.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, those who lost their lives, and the families, witnesses, and first responders affected by this tragedy.

If you or someone you love is struggling, help is available:
📞 Lifeline 13 11 14
📞 Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636

Please be kind to yourselves and to one another during this time.

When You’re Not Ready for Therapy

Not being ready doesn’t mean you don’t want support.
It often means:

A protective part is guarding you

Your nervous system is in survival mode

Your mind doesn’t feel safe enough to open up

You’re not alone in this.
Therapy begins long before the first session — in the moments you start getting curious about yourself.
