When Alicia Hughes joined Beachmere Health Centre in 2024, it was more than just a role change; it was her first time working in general practice, after years working as a registered nurse in hospital settings.

‘Transitioning from hospital nursing into primary care was a significant learning curve, as I had to adapt to a completely different healthcare system and model of care. Brisbane North PHN has played an important role in supporting this transition,’ Alicia says.

Alicia’s commitment to continuous learning, passion for her community and dedication to undertaking PHN continuous quality improvement initiatives has strengthened practice processes and delivered positive patient care outcomes.

In Queensland, the nasal spray flu vaccine called FluMist is currently funded under both the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and additional Queensland state-funded programs.
For 2026, the groups covered are:
All children aged 2 to 5 years inclusive in Queensland can receive FluMist free of charge.
Queensland has also recently expanded eligibility to:
Children aged 6 to 17 years inclusive who struggle with needles.
