It’s winter in Queensland, aka puffer jackets, hot drinks and dressing for Antarctica when it’s 20°C. 🥶☕

But while we joke about the cold, winter illnesses are no laughing matter. 🤧

The flu can cause serious illness and lead to hospitalisation. It can be particularly serious for people aged 65 years and over, infants, young children, pregnant women, and anyone with a chronic illness or low immunity, which is why vaccination is so important for these groups.

The free flu vaccine is available now for all Queenslanders aged 6 months and older.

All children aged 2 to 5 years, (before they turn 6), can now get a free nasal spray vaccine instead of an injection. Older children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years (before they turn 18) can also get the nasal spray vaccine for free if they struggle with needles.

You can get your vaccination from a GP, pharmacy, community clinic, or another vaccination provider.

For more information about the flu vaccine, visit: https://www.vaccinate.initiatives.qld.gov.au/what-to-vaccinate-against/influenza

Winter is nearly here — it’s time to get ready.

You can help protect yourself and your community by getting vaccinated against winter nasties like the flu.

Check if you’re eligible for free vaccines:
🔹COVID-19 vaccine free for adults in Australia regardless of Medicare or visa status.
🔹Flu vaccine is free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for people 65 and over and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 6 months and over.
🔹Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine is now free under the NIP for people 75 and over and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 60 and over.

If you are not eligible for a free vaccine through the NIP, some states and territories may offer additional vaccines. Check with your health professional or contact your state or territory health department.

Egg preferences aside, the feeling that you are "walking on eggshells" could mean you're in an unhealthy relationship.

If you feel unsafe, and you worry that anything you do or say could anger or upset the other person, that could be a sign of emotional abuse and coercive control. Emotional abuse is not always easy to identify, but it can lower self-esteem and confidence, impacting your mental health and wellbeing.

Emotional abuse can look like:
📢 constant criticism, put downs and name calling, often in relation to appearance/attractiveness, parenting ability or likeability
👉 intentionally embarrassing you
👕 often or always telling you what to wear or criticising your looks
⚠️ threatening to harm themselves to intimidate and control you or make you afraid
🚫 threatening to harm your children, other loved ones or pets.

Emotional abuse can be a sign of coercive control, which is illegal in Queensland. If you experience coercive control, it is never your fault.

Everyone deserves to be in a relationship where you are safe, equal and respected. To learn more about coercive control, Queensland's laws and find support, visit www.qld.gov.au/coercivecontrol

Routine childhood vaccines have been around for many decades and have a great safety record. ✅

Many serious diseases that once affected large numbers of children are now rare in Australia because of continued vaccination.

Check the National Immunisation Program schedule to find out which vaccines your family can get for free and when. 🗓️
