When Chris’s husband David was unexpectedly found to have three significant heart blockages, the weeks that followed came as a shock.

When he was referred to Flinders Private Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, David asked Chris to come along with him, and she quickly discovered how valuable the program could be for partners and support people too.

Across the six-week program, patients and their support people learn more about heart health, exercise, nutrition and the lifestyle changes that can support recovery and long-term wellbeing.

For Chris, that knowledge helped her better understand how she could support David at home — from encouraging regular walking to making informed choices around food and nutrition.

“The education programs, particularly for a support person, are so valuable. Coming with him was the best thing I did.”

Every day at Flinders Private Hospital, our healthcare workers ask a version of the same question: Are you OK?

They ask it of patients, families, colleagues and one another, often in moments that are difficult, uncertain or overwhelming.

Today, on R U OK? Day, we’re reminded to turn that question back toward the people who spend their days caring for others.

To notice. To check in. To listen properly to the answer.

These candid moments from across Flinders Private Hospital remind us that caring for our community also means caring for the people who care for it.

Ask R U OK? Stay for the conversation. And keep checking in.

Across ACHA Health’s three South Australian hospitals - Ashford Hospital, Flinders Private Hospital and The Memorial Hospital - “Are you OK?” is a question asked hundreds of times each day.

We ask it of our patients. We ask it of their families. We ask because listening, noticing and checking in are an important part of care.

R U OK? Day is also a reminder to ask the same question of the people we work alongside every day.

To pause. To check in. To really listen to the answer. And, when needed, to make space for the conversation that follows.

Across ACHA Health, we’re reminding our teams that care starts with looking out for one another too.

A simple question can make a meaningful difference: R U OK?

Today at Flinders Private Hospital, two complex extravascular defibrillator procedures were successfully completed, bringing innovative technology and new treatment options to our patients.

A huge thank you to our outstanding multidisciplinary team, whose skill, collaboration and dedication made these procedures possible. From planning through to implantation and recovery, every team member played an important role.

We’re proud to see advanced cardiac care, expertise and teamwork come together to support the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Recently, our team welcomed GPs and healthcare professionals to Flinders Private Hospital for an education evening focused on our Structural Heart Program.

The evening provided an opportunity to share more about structural heart disease, the patients who may benefit from specialist assessment, and the advanced treatment options now available.

Led by A/Prof Ajay Sinhal, Interventional Cardiologist, the Structural Heart Program brings together expertise in interventional cardiology, cardiac imaging, cardiothoracic surgery and critical care.

Flinders Private Hospital has a long history of innovation in structural heart care, including performing the first TAVI using a balloon-expandable valve in the Asia-Pacific region.

Today, advances in structural heart care mean some patients may have access to minimally invasive treatment options that were not previously available to them.

Symptoms such as unexplained breathlessness, fatigue, dizziness, fainting or a decline in exercise tolerance shouldn’t always be dismissed as simply part of getting older.

If you or someone you care for is experiencing symptoms, speak with your GP about whether specialist assessment may be appropriate.

If you are experiencing an immediate life-threatening medical emergency, call Triple Zero (000).

What started as a student placement has grown into a career at Flinders Private Hospital.

Kayla first joined Flinders Private Hospital as a student before going on to complete our Graduate Program. Today, she is working as a Registered Nurse on Ward 4 North.

Ward 4 North cares for orthopaedic and paediatric surgical patients, but for Kayla, it’s the people who make it special.

“Helping others is what brings me to work each day, and Ward 4 North truly feels like family.”

It’s that supportive, close-knit culture that Kayla loves most about coming to work each day.

After undergoing a triple bypass, Leigh knew surgery was only the beginning of his recovery.

Through Flinders Private Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, he found the support, confidence and motivation to get moving again, alongside others who understood what he was going through.

Our six-week program supports people recovering from cardiac surgery, an intervention or cardiac event, as well as those living with a newly diagnosed heart condition. With guidance from our multidisciplinary cardiac rehabilitation team, patients receive tailored support around exercise, nutrition, medications and heart health.

For Leigh, it helped him return to the gym, regain his confidence and embrace what he describes as a “new lease on life”.

“It got me back to doing things at the gym because I know that surgery wasn’t the end of it all. It was probably only the beginning.”
