The body adapts to whatever position it is held in most often. Sitting for long periods without changing posture sends a repetitive signal to the nervous system that narrows the range of movement patterns the body considers normal. Brief, regular movement breaks, even just a few minutes of standing, walking, or shoulder rolls, help preserve the nervous system's full range rather than just managing the discomfort of staying still.

You do not have to be in pain to start chiropractic care. Many patients wait until a flare-up forces the decision, but proactive care is built to catch small imbalances long before they turn into bigger problems. If it has been a while since anything hurt but longer since a checkup, that is still a good time to come in.

When the body is under sustained stress, the nervous system defaults to a heightened, guarded state. Muscles tighten, posture shifts forward, and spinal joints carry more load as a result. Chiropractic care can interrupt this pattern not just mechanically but neurologically, by delivering precise input that signals the nervous system to ease off. This is one reason some patients notice improvements in sleep quality, tension headaches, and general restlessness alongside changes in their physical symptoms.

A headache that starts at the base of the skull is not always coming from the head. Cervicogenic headaches originate in the joints and muscles of the upper neck, and the pain simply travels upward, which is why treating the head alone rarely resolves them. Addressing the neck directly often brings relief that other approaches miss.

Most people know the brain coordinates movement, but fewer know that the cerebellum, which accounts for roughly 10 percent of brain volume, processes more than half of all the brain's neurons and depends heavily on accurate input from the spine and joints. When that input is disrupted by spinal restriction, coordination and balance can be affected in ways that are not always obvious until they are corrected. This is one of the reasons chiropractic care sometimes produces improvements that seem to go well beyond the back.

Across Australia, 43.0% of adults have consulted a chiropractor during their lifetime. Among those who sought chiropractic care specifically for back pain, the 2026 Australian Spinal Health Survey recorded consistently positive outcomes.

More than three quarters (77.3%) reported some level of improvement in their back pain following chiropractic treatment. Almost four in ten (39.2%) reported their pain had significantly improved or completely resolved.

A further 10.1% reported additional mental health and wellbeing benefits beyond pain relief alone.

Chiropractic healthcare is drug-free, non-invasive and evidence-based. It can form part of a broader biopsychosocial approach to back pain care that considers the physical, psychological and lifestyle factors that influence recovery.

If you are living with back pain, whether recently developed or long-standing, professional assessment and treatment can make a meaningful difference to mobility, quality of life and mental wellbeing.

One of the less discussed but clinically significant factors in back pain is fear avoidance, where people restrict or avoid movement because they are concerned activity will cause further injury or pain.

New data from the 2026 Australian Spinal Health Survey found 86.4% of Australians with low back pain show some level of fear avoidance behaviour.

That matters because avoiding movement can often make back pain worse over time. Reduced activity can contribute to deconditioning, reduced confidence, increased sensitivity and a cycle of pain that becomes harder to break the longer it continues.

Fear avoidance is a common and understandable response to pain, but it is also something that can be addressed with the right care, reassurance and a gradual return to movement.

Evidence-based care, including chiropractic treatment, movement advice and appropriate psychological support, can help people return to normal activity safely and confidently.

For many Australian women, back pain is not simply a physical condition. It is adding to an already substantial mental load.

New data from the 'Back Pain In Australia 2026 Spinal Health Survey' shows that among women with back pain, 46% report a moderate, significant or extreme mental health impact. More than half (52.8%) say back pain adds to their daily mental burden, contributing to fatigue, reduced motivation, anxiety, disrupted sleep and reduced quality of life.

For women balancing work, family, caring responsibilities and everyday demands, back pain can become a compounding health issue, making an already demanding workload harder to manage. Concerningly, women are also the least likely group to have received a formal clinical diagnosis, with 53.7% yet to do so, often due to cost pressures or the difficulty of prioritising their own care.

Back pain in women should not be dismissed, normalised or managed around. Early intervention and evidence-based care can help address both the physical symptoms and the broader psychological toll of persistent pain and prevent chronic pain.

This Spinal Health Month, the Australian Chiropractors Association is encouraging women to get back to feeling good and take back pain seriously. Seek support early and access drug-free, evidence-based healthcare that considers the whole person.

If back pain is adding to your mental load, it’s time to adjust your thinking.

Back pain is often assumed to worsen with age. But new data from the 2026 Spinal Health Survey reveals something less expected: the mental health toll of back pain peaks among younger working-age Australians.

Among Australians aged 31 to 40 with back pain, 56.0% report a moderate, significant or extreme mental health impact, the highest of any age group. In the 25 to 30 age group, 55.6% report the same. Three in four people across both groups experience at least some psychological impact from their back pain.

These are Australians building careers, raising families and managing financial pressures, while back pain adds a significant and often unacknowledged mental load.

The data also reveals concerning patterns among younger Australians:

• Women aged 25 to 30 experience the largest gender gap of any age group, with 63.5% reporting a moderate-to-extreme mental health impact, compared with 44.7% of men.

• Back pain prevalence is already extremely high, with 95.4% of 18 to 24 year-olds having experienced back pain in their lifetime.

• Despite this burden, young Australians aged 18 to 24 are the least likely of any age group to seek professional treatment, with many self-managing through over-the-counter medication.

• Chronic pain is already emerging, affecting 26.0% of 18 to 24 year-olds and 33.0% of 31 to 40 year-olds with back pain.

Early, evidence-based healthcare matters. The biopsychosocial model of care addresses both the physical and psychological dimensions of back pain and is most effective when applied early.

For young Australians, back pain is not just a health issue. It is a quality of life issue, with consequences that can compound over time.

This Spinal Health Month, if back pain is affecting your mental health, adjust your thinking. Consult a chiro and get back to feeling good.
