Coping with a loved one's battle with opioids can be tough, and communicating about it can come with a different set of challenges centred around stigma. Toward the beginning, families can "internalise stigmatising thoughts around substance abuse as they may feel ashamed and embarrassed or that they’ve failed as a loved one of that family member. Following an unimaginable tragedy, she forms an unlikely friendship with her would-be father-in-law, Daniel (played by Morgan Freeman) which gives her a fighting chance to put her life back together. In order to prepare for the part, Pugh spoke to numerous people who had suffered with opioid addiction which helped her understand the physicalities and the pain. What goes through their minds. What the actual struggle is about. “I think the best way to sum it up is (addiction) doesn’t choose. It can happen to anyone.”
