THE FOUR Ds of QUITTING CI******ES 🚬✋⛔️ The 4 Ds are simple and effective methods you can try to manage cravings when they strike. You can apply them to other behaviours or habits you’re wanting to walk away from, such as drinking, gambling, and many compulsive tendencies.

Try the 4 Ds when you have a craving:

DELAY 🚶🏻
DISTRACT 💡
DEEP BREATHE 🧘
DRINK WATER 💧

DELAY: Delay acting on the urge to smoke (or drink, or other unwanted behaviour/activity). After a few minutes, the craving will decrease & eventually dissolve. Research indicates that the smoking impulse disappears within 10 minutes.

DISTRACT: Take your mind off your urge by substituting behaviour/activity for another enjoyable activity, going for a walk, meditating, listening to music, chatting to a supportive or funny friend, using a quitting app, or any other activity that diverts your attention away from your urge.

DEEP BREATHE: Take 3 long, slow, mindful breaths. Remain focused on these breaths. Continue if desired, until the craving subsides. The urge may come and go. Keep moving through it until it dissolves completely.

DRINK WATER: Slowly and mindfully drink a glass of water. Focus on the moment and the sensation of it.

In Alcoholics Anonymous, there’s a powerful, gentle and effective philosophy: “Just take it one day at a time”. Remember that it’s easier to live through another day without your previous habit, than it is to start the journey all over again. Quitting may be hard, but so is relapsing and having to start again from the beginning!

Quitting is simply many moments, one rolling into another and then the next, of denying yourself the activity and it eventually dissolving and disappearing. In the beginning stages, these cravings will resurface regularly: just take each moment as it comes, and be proud of yourself for passing the test each time.

Initially, these moments may feel Iike an eternity, but eventually your ‘new life’ takes over and becomes your ‘normal’. Just don’t give up! Well, you know what I mean … 🤗

INTERVENTIONS CAN ONLY WORK WITH ONE SECRET INGREDIENT 🤔 I used to watch ‘Intervention’, a TV series that followed a person's journey through addiction, destructive behaviours or substance dependence, and the subsequent 'intervention' imposed by their concerned friends or family. In the end notes of each episode, we learned whether the subject had succeeded in giving up their addiction or destructive habits. Some had, others hadn’t. And then there were those who had succeeded initially, but had subsequently relapsed.

The ones that did succeed had one thing in common: they were READY. Perhaps they too were fed up with their own BS, or they’d reached a point of the pain of staying the same became greater than the pain of changing. Call it what you will, it’s highly individual anyway. But whatever the core reason behind their change, they were READY.

I believe there is no such thing as someone who lacks willpower. Only someone who lacks readiness. This is an important distinction, one that can mean the difference between being set up for failure, or succeeding in giving up a habit we know isn't good for us.

You see, no amount of nagging or fussing or intervention or forced removal from the situation will make a person give something up ... unless & until THEY ARE READY THEMSELVES.

As a naturopath whose passion is supporting people to lead better lives through healthier habits, if someone comes to me with an addiction or habit they want to get rid of, I always first assess where they're at in the Stages of Change model:

~ Precontemplation
~ Contemplation
~ Preparation
~ Action
~ Maintenance

This takes practice, discernment, time, patience, and some highly skilled questioning on the part of the practitioner.

And while I acknowledge that those at any stage of the change cycle need guidance & support, if they are still in the precontemplation or contemplation stage, then you can safely bet that they're not quite fully ready yet. And that's okay.

I'm not going to give them false hope that sets them up for failure, I will simply put in other helpful supports & 'small changes' they can begin with, until they ARE ready.

Anyone can give something up, when the pain of remaining stuck in the habit becomes greater than the pain of giving it up. But that balance has to tip first. It's human nature to stay within the pleasant little bubble of our familiar comfort zones, not to mention the loss that giving something up that we enjoy entails. But for as long as we're snug & comfortable in that bubble, we're simply NOT READY.

And until then, no amount of intervention by anyone else, as entertaining as the show makes the process out to be, will ever be as effective as the person deciding for themselves that they're finally ready to break free.

As difficult as the addiction journey can be for both the person going through it and the people around them watching on, the only person that can truly intervene on an individual, is the individual themselves. And that can only happen when they're truly, unflinchingly committed to change. When it comes down to it, that is the most powerful form of READINESS there is ☺️
