Providing compassionate care & continuity from fertility to pregnancy at Norwest Private, Westmead Private & Westmead Public I trained in the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology at Westmead Hospital after obtaining my medical degree from the University of Sydney. After spending one year of advanced training in the United Kingdom I commenced private practice in 1996. Since then I have held the

position of Visiting Medical Officer in Western Sydney Area Health Service. As well as working out of Norwest Private Hospital, I have an appointment at Westmead Public Hospital where I am the Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department. Through my work at Westmead, I am regularly involved in the care of complex and high-risk patients. I am involved in the teaching of medical students from the Universities of Notre Dame and Sydney and am also extensively involved in the training of junior doctors in the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology. I am presently the Chair of Training for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and am also a NSW representative on the College’s federal council. The major focus of my private practice is endeavouring to provide high-quality personalised care, whether that be related to pregnancy, gynaecological problems or infertility. Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy can understandably cause significant anxiety.

While some causes are minor and resolve without issue, bleeding should always be discussed with your healthcare provider so the cause can be properly assessed.

The most important thing is not to make assumptions.

Patients are sometimes surprised when two experienced doctors recommend different approaches.

Medicine isn't always black and white.

Often there are multiple safe and reasonable options, with decisions influenced by clinical judgement, experience and individual patient circumstances.

The most important thing is that the pregnant woman sits at the centre of the decision making.

Good healthcare is rarely one-size-fits-all.

My advice is simple: if you're worried, call.

Whether it's bleeding, pain, reduced movements or simply something that doesn't feel right, it's always better to have a conversation.

Reassurance is part of good maternity care.

RSV notifications have now surpassed those of influenza and COVID-19 in Australia.

As at 29 July 2026, Australia had recorded 98,784 RSV notifications, compared with 60,870 influenza notifications and 55,898 COVID-19 notifications.

RSV commonly causes a respiratory infection, but it can lead to serious illness in young babies. Infants under three months are at greatest risk of severe disease.

Vaccination during pregnancy helps protective antibodies pass to the baby before birth. The Australian Immunisation Handbook recommends one dose during each pregnancy from 28 weeks, ideally before 36 weeks. The vaccine is funded under the National Immunisation Program.

If you are pregnant, speak with your obstetrician, GP, midwife or pharmacist about what is appropriate for you.

Many people are surprised to learn that due dates are estimates, not deadlines.

Your due date helps guide care and monitoring, but every baby follows their own timeline.

It's one of the reasons patience can become a very important skill late in pregnancy.

After caring for women through pregnancy for many years, one thing stands out:

No two pregnancies are ever the same.

It's easy to compare your pregnancy to a friend's, something you've read online or even a previous pregnancy of your own. But pregnancy isn't a checklist where everyone follows the same path.

Some women experience every symptom imaginable. Others experience very few.

Some pregnancies progress exactly as expected. Others require closer monitoring and adjustments along the way.

What I wish more women knew is that differences don't automatically mean something is wrong.

The most important thing is having care that is tailored to you, your circumstances and your pregnancy.

If there's one lesson I've learnt over the years, it's that personalised care will always be more valuable than general advice found online.

One of the most important things expectant mothers can monitor during pregnancy is their baby's movements.

While babies naturally have sleep cycles, a noticeable reduction in movement can sometimes indicate that further assessment is needed.

If you ever feel your baby's movements have changed, don't wait until tomorrow. Contact your care team or the birth unit at your hospital.

You are never wasting anyone's time.

Pregnancy comes with many new symptoms, most of which are completely normal.

However, there are some signs that should never be ignored, including significant bleeding, severe abdominal pain, persistent headaches, reduced fetal movements and sudden swelling.

If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and seek advice.

It's always better to ask the question than sit at home worrying.

One of the most common questions I get is: "How do you decide when it's time to induce labour?"

The answer is rarely based on a single factor. We consider your baby's wellbeing, your health, how far along the pregnancy is and whether the risks of continuing the pregnancy outweigh the benefits.

Every pregnancy is different, which is why induction decisions should always be individualised rather than based on a fixed rule.
