💡 Think speech pathology is only for children who aren’t talking? Think again!

Speech pathologists support children across a wide range of communication skills. From speech sounds and language development to literacy, social communication and fluency, our role is to help children communicate confidently and participate in the things that matter to them.

Communication doesn’t always mean speaking! We can also support children who communicate using gestures, visuals, communication devices and other forms of AAC.

Felt boards might look like simple play… but they can target SO many speech and language goals 👇🏼

🧩 Categorisation – sort animals vs people vs objects
(then level up to farm vs zoo, big vs small)
🐄 Animal sounds – great for early communicators learning to imitate and engage (moo, baa, roar)
🗣 Descriptive language – expand vocabulary with colours, size & features (“big grey elephant”, “spotty cow”)
👂 Following directions – target 1–2 step instructions with concepts (“put the apple on the tree”, “give the cow to the boy”)
📚 Nouns & verbs – label who + what they’re doing (“the girl is feeding”, “the dog is running”)
⏰ Temporal concepts – introduce before/after during play routines
📖 Story retell & sequencing – build simple narratives (first, next, then)
💬 Sentence structure – expand into full sentences (SVO: “They are feeding the giraffe at the zoo”)
🤝 Turn-taking & conversation – practise waiting, commenting, and shared attention

✨ One simple toy can target multiple speech and language skills at once, making therapy fun, engaging, and easy to carry over into everyday play at home.

When kids can’t say what they need, they show us instead.
What looks like naughty, defiant or bad behaviour is often a child communicating frustration, fear, pain or overwhelm the only way they can.

⁉️ There’s a common worry that if a child starts using AAC, they’ll stop developing spoken language.

The research actually shows the opposite. AAC does not prevent speech. It provides children with a way to communicate effectively right now while also supporting their overall language development.

For many children, having access to AAC can reduce frustration, increase opportunities to engage, and even support the development of spoken words over time.

♥️ Every child deserves a way to be understood — and AAC is one powerful tool that helps make that possible!

Behind every game, story or pretend play activity, a speech pathologist is targeting real communication goals like language, speech sounds, social skills and conversation.

It might look simple from the outside, but it’s intentional, evidence-based therapy designed to help children communicate confidently in everyday life.
