Sometimes, when a child’s behaviour escalates, our instinct is to fix or correct it immediately. But a dysregulated brain simply doesn’t have the capacity for logic, problem-solving, or taking in instructions.
When we’re overwhelmed, it’s hard to think clearly, and children are no different.
That’s why connection comes before correction.
Connecting doesn’t mean saying “yes” to everything or letting go of boundaries. It means creating safety by:
- Getting down to their eye level
- Using a calm, grounded voice
- Showing curiosity instead of judgment
- Listening to what their body and actions are communicating
When kids feel understood and safe with us, they gain a strong foundation to regulate, problem-solve, and try again. Next time you see a challenging behaviour, try shifting from “How do I stop this?” to “What is this behaviour communicating?”
