Books are for everyone. 📚💜

This Book Week, we’re celebrating the many ways children can enjoy books, stories and reading.

Reading doesn’t have to mean sitting quietly and following every word from beginning to end. A child might look at the pictures, turn the pages, point to something that catches their attention, listen for a little while, act out part of the story or ask to read the same book again and again.

What matters is the opportunity to connect.

Sharing a book can support communication, imagination, language, learning and relationships, and these moments can happen naturally as part of everyday life.

So, this Book Week, pick a favourite book, follow your child’s or young person interests and let them join in their own way.

Because every story is an opportunity to connect, communicate, learn and enjoy being together.

Speech Pathology Week | 23–29 August 2026

This Speech Pathology Week, we’re celebrating how communication creates possibility. 💜

At Koorana, our speech pathologists support children to communicate in ways that work for them — creating opportunities to connect, learn, grow, belong, choose, participate and thrive.

From building relationships and expressing ideas to engaging in learning and everyday experiences, communication can open the door to greater connection and participation.

✨ Every child deserves to be heard, understood and supported to communicate in their own way.
Let’s celebrate the possibilities that communication can create. Follow the link below Speech Therapy Services | Koorana Child & Family Services (https://ap1.hubs.ly/H01jFkr0)

Therapy works best when it connects with everyday life. 💜

For children, some of the most meaningful opportunities to learn, practise and build skills happen in the places they already know — at home, in preschool or school, during play and out in the community.

That’s why Koorana’s approach to therapy extends into the everyday settings where children live, learn, play and participate.

Our therapists work alongside children, families, educators and the other important people in a child’s life to understand their strengths and goals, share practical strategies and embed support into everyday routines and experiences.

This might include supporting a child to:

💬 Communicate their needs and ideas
🤝 Connect and participate with others
🧩 Join in play and everyday activities
📚 Participate in learning
🌱 Build confidence and independence in ways that are meaningful to them

By supporting children in their natural environments — and building the knowledge and confidence of the people around them — therapy can become part of everyday life, creating more opportunities for children to participate, learn and thrive.

Today at the Australasian Society for Developmental Paediatrics Conference, our CEO, Morgan Fitzpatrick, and Prof Frank Oberklaid from Murdoch Children's Research Institute will be presenting a plenary on the new Thriving Kids program.

As a member of the Thriving Kids Advisory Group, Morgan contributed to the development of its recommendations, bringing both her professional experience leading Koorana and her lived experience as a parent. Prof Frank Oberklaid has decades of experience in paediatrics and led the Advisory Group as Co-Chair alongside the Hon. Mark Butler.

Now, an important part of the conversation is how those recommendations translate into practice across sectors.

This plenary discussion will focus on the model's design principles which place children, families and early intervention at the centre of care. Through a presentation and interactive discussion with the audience, Prof Oberklaid and Morgan will explore the model of care, intersections with the developmental pediatric field and how the sector can work together to provide more coordinated, strengths-based and family-centred support to children with developmental support needs.

💜Squish, shape, create & learn!

Playdough is more than messy fun — it’s a simple way to support children’s learning and development through play. 💜

🖐️ Fine Motor Skills – strengthens little hands for writing and everyday tasks.
🎭 Pretend Play – sparks imagination through role-play and creative stories.
💬 Language Development – encourages children to talk, describe and build vocabulary.
🤝 Social Skills – supports sharing, turn-taking and cooperation.
👐 Sensory Exploration – explores different textures, shapes and movements.
🔢 Maths Concepts – introduces counting, size, shapes and spatial awareness.

🥣 Make your own playdough!

Ingredients:
• 1 cup flour
• 2 tsp cream of tartar
• ½ cup salt
• 2 tbsp vegetable oil
• 2 drops food colouring
• ½–1 cup warm water

Method:

1️⃣ Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
2️⃣ Combine the wet ingredients in a separate bowl.
3️⃣ Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture until a dough forms.
4️⃣ Allow the dough to cool, then knead until smooth.

💜 Mix, squish, create and play!

At Koorana, we know that play is a powerful way for children to learn, explore and connect. 💜

💜 Big Feelings in Little Bodies

Many children have big feelings. They’re still learning how to understand and manage them. And we can help them along the way.

Here are some simple ways to support your child through big feelings:

🌿 Stay calm: Your calm helps their nervous system settle.
💬 Name the feeling: Help them identify what they’re feeling. It helps them feel seen and understood.
🤗 Offer comfort: A cuddle, gentle words or quiet time — or the complete opposite, such as jumping or movement — can help them feel safe. Find your child’s tune: they might need to “power down” or “power up” to regulate.
💡 Teach strategies: Breathing, counting or finding a quiet space can help them manage big feelings over time.
⭐ Celebrate progress: Praise their efforts, not just the calm moments.

Big feelings can be hard. Connecting with your child can make them easier to navigate. 💜
