A friendly reminder about the upcoming Australia-wide test of the new AusAlert emergency warning system.

On Monday, 27 July, compatible mobile devices across Australia will receive a test emergency alert. This is a planned national test designed to help ensure the system works effectively when it is needed in a real emergency.

When the test alert is received, your mobile device may vibrate, play a loud siren-like tone and display a message clearly identifying the alert as a test. While the sound may be unexpected, there is no cause for concern.

The test alert is scheduled for:
2.00 pm (AEST) in Queensland and New South Wales
1.30 pm (ACST) in South Australia

You do not need to do anything when you receive this test alert.

AusAlert will become Australia's new emergency warning system and, in a real emergency, will be used to share important information about events such as bushfires, floods and other significant incidents.

If you have any questions or concerns about the test, please speak with the Village Office or visit https://www.ausalert.gov.au/alerts-explained/national-test for more information.

“I was 17 when I was called up.”

Belrose Country Club resident, Charlie Watson, remembers it clearly. Born in 1935 and raised in Sydney, Charlie was still a teenager when National Service changed the course of his life. At just 17, he left his job as a messenger and began training with the Air Force at RAAF Rathmines on Lake Macquarie.

Charlie served as one of around a thousand national servicemen posted there and applied himself fully during training. That effort paid off. At the end of his training, Charlie was named Most Proficient Trainee across the entire intake. He was presented with a cup, which he still keeps at home today.

Encouraged by the discipline and structure of Air Force life, Charlie decided to stay on. He went on to serve for 23 years, including time overseas. While he was not directly involved in combat, his respect for those who were has never faded.

Ask Charlie what stayed with him most from his service, and his answer is simple.

“Discipline,” he says. “How to behave yourself and being kind to other people.”

ANZAC Day remains deeply important to Charlie. He became an active member of the ex-National Servicemen’s Association and continues to attend commemorative services. Charlie will pay his respects by performing the Ode of Remembrance at today’s ANZAC Day service.
