June is Cataract Awareness Month. Did you know that cataracts are a leading cause of blindness worldwide, and nearly half of Australians over 50 are affected?

Cataracts cloud the lens of the eye, leading to blurred vision, light sensitivity, and reduced visual clarity. They’re commonly caused by ageing, but can also result from genetics, diabetes, eye injuries, smoking, or excessive UV exposure.

Here’s the good news: with regular eye exams, cataracts can often be detected early and monitored to help preserve vision.

Are sunglasses necessary in winter?

In many cases, yes.

Sunglasses are more than a fashion accessory. Even in cooler weather, UV radiation remains present. Combined with glare from reflective surfaces, this may contribute to visual discomfort.

Sunglasses with appropriate UV protection can assist in protecting your eyes throughout the year. Consider choosing sunglasses that meet Australian Standards for UV protection.

Prescription sunglasses are available here, as well as a range of sunglasses including , Maui Jim and Oroton.
