💜 Thursday Thought

Communication is one of the most powerful tools a support worker has.

Great support isn’t only about completing tasks—it’s about listening, understanding, and helping people feel heard.

A simple conversation, taking the time to explain something clearly, or involving someone in decisions about their own supports can make a lasting difference.

At My Village Carers, we believe communication is the foundation of person-centred support. Every participant deserves to be listened to, respected, and empowered to have a voice in their own journey.

Because sometimes the greatest impact isn’t what we do—it’s how we make someone feel.

💬 What communication skill do you think makes the biggest difference when supporting someone?

A simple pair of jeans. A big impact.

Yesterday, the My Village Carers team proudly swapped their usual workwear for jeans to support Jeans for Genes Day.

Thanks to our incredible team, we donated $220—and with the major sponsor matching every dollar, that became $440 towards life-changing genetic research and support for Australian children and their families.

At My Village Carers, we believe caring goes beyond the people we support every day. It’s about giving back, standing behind important causes, and making a difference wherever we can.

A huge thank you to everyone who got involved. We hope that next year we can get even more of our team, our participants, and our local community involved so that together we can make an even bigger impact.

💜 Thursday Thought

Being a great support worker isn’t about saying “yes” to everything or constantly going above and beyond.

It’s about knowing when to encourage instead of doing. Coaching instead of completing. Empowering instead of creating dependence.

Every small opportunity to let someone make a choice, learn a skill, or have a go builds confidence and independence.

That’s what the NDIS is all about.

At My Village Carers, we believe great support means:
✔ Working within your role.
✔ Respecting professional boundaries.
✔ Supporting participants to achieve their goals.
✔ Promoting choice, dignity and independence.

Sometimes doing the task yourself is quicker.

Supporting someone to do it themselves takes patience, but that’s where the real progress happens.

Success isn’t measured by how much we do for someone. It’s measured by what they’re able to achieve because of our support.

💬 What does great support look like to you?

No one understands the journey like a parent. ❤️

Behind every child is a family advocating, sacrificing and doing everything they can to give their loved one the best possible future.

Early intervention changes lives, but many families are feeling the impact of reduced NDIS supports.

How has your family been affected? We’d love to hear your story below.

Need NDIS services or Support Coordination? My Village Carers is here to help. Get in touch today to see how we can support you or your loved one.

👖It’s Jeans for Genes Day this Thursday!👖

At My Village Carers, we believe that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.

That’s why this Thursday our team will be swapping their work gear for their favourite pair of denim to help support Jeans for Genes Day and raise funds for children and families affected by genetic conditions.

Here’s how we’re getting involved:

Every My Village Carers staff member who wears their denim and sends us a photo = we’ll donate $5.

💬 Every unique person who comments on this post = we’ll donate an extra $1.

❤️ Together, we’re aiming to donate $400!

Now we need YOUR help…

👇 Tell us in the comments:
What’s your favourite pair of denim?
👖 The old faithful pair?
😂 The ones you’ve had for 10 years?
✨ Or the pair you only wear on special occasions?

Or simply drop a 💙 to show your support!

Every unique comment helps us get one step closer to our donation goal while supporting an incredible cause.

Thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of children and families affected by genetic conditions. 💙

💜 A REMINDER FOR ALL SUPPORT WORKERS

Sometimes the best support isn’t doing something for someone — it’s helping them learn how to do it themselves.

Before automatically stepping in, ask yourself:

✨ Can they do this themselves?
✨ Can I show them how?
✨ Can we do it together?
✨ Can I encourage them to have a go?
✨ Is there an opportunity here to build a new skill?

Model the skills you want to build.

🗣️ Model language and communication
💜 Model emotional regulation
💭 Encourage problem-solving and reflection
🙌 Support choice and decision-making
🌱 Look for opportunities to build independence

It might be quicker to make the meal, clean the room, speak for someone or complete the task yourself — but quicker doesn’t always mean better support.

Our role isn’t to do everything for the people we support.

It’s to support them to build confidence, develop skills, make their own choices and be as independent as possible.

Don’t just ask, “What can I do for them?”
Ask, “What can I help them learn to do?” 💜
