It's Speech Pathology Week!

In adult neurological speech pathology, communication and swallowing can look different for everyone.

Our team of 5 speech pathologists work alongside people living with conditions such as stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Huntington’s disease and other neurological conditions to support the things that matter most — being understood, staying connected, eating and drinking safely and having a voice in everyday life.

Sometimes that means working on speech or swallowing. Sometimes it means finding a new way to communicate through AAC. And sometimes it means helping families and support teams slow down, listen differently and create better opportunities for someone to be heard.

This week is a great reminder that communication is about so much more than words — it’s connection, choice, independence and identity. 💚

Innovation in action 👏
Our Speech Pathology team is excited to be using BiSSkApp with a client in the community to support swallowing rehabilitation in a functional, accessible way.

By combining evidence-based therapy with innovative technology, we’re helping clients practise skills in real-world environments, build confidence, and work towards safer, more effective swallowing outcomes.

It’s exciting to see how technology can open new opportunities for therapy—making supports more engaging, personalised, and meaningful for the people we work with.

This week, the small, but mighty team of OTs at TTS have been active in various locations in the Northern Territory. To commemorate OT Week - Ability in Action , we are going to share some of their stories.

Karen: Spent the week in Alice Springs, reviewing clients for assistive tech solutions, completing assessments for Specialist Disability Accommodation and catching up on the progress of regular therapy clients.

Chloe and Simon: Spent the week in Tennant Creek, including a day in Elliot completing functional assessments. It was a sad time for Chloe for whom this will be her last trip to Tennant Creek. They measured up for ramps and rails, set up a tilt in space manual wheelchair for a client who has been waiting for 2 years for a mobility solution, and also did some creative mechanics turning an elevating leg rest from a wheelchair into a stump support for a client. Whilst there, they there was some fancy work trialling Meta glasses for clients with low vision.

The Central Australian-Barkly team (Karen, Chloe and Simon) coordinated their efforts to complete concurrent home visits and AT trials, for Tennant Creek clients in Alice Springs Hospital, to ensure a smooth discharge home. Great collaboration !

Jacqui: Spent the week in Darwin trialling some powered wheelchair solutions with a client in Darwin amidst getting a stack of reports done for her clients.

Viv: Spent the week in Darwin participating in spasticity training for some her future upper limb therapy clients, and getting ready to take on a new community, Gunbalayna, next week!

Ioanna (our OT student): Spent the week in Darwin preparing creative visual resources in Minecraft to help a client achieve a better sleep routine, completing home modifications referrals and being an excellent all rounder supporting the team.

Julia: Was keeping the fires burning back in Darwin, preparing visual resources to assist with future manual handling for a client, and sending off a complex manual wheelchair application to NDIS for a remote Katherine client!

Lilli: was sweating it out in Gapuwiyak encouraging a young man to return to independent powered wheelchair driving, something he has not achieved for many years due a broken down chair. In her words, 'Him on the powered wheelchair today was unreal! Just like having the best time with his Mum sitting at the house across the road yelling encouragement! Honestly, couldn't have asked for any more! My little OT heart was melting"

Isn't this team doing just a great job for OT in the NT!!!!
