SLOWING DOWN | and seeing what we find
The children arrived with energy - as they always do - but as we stepped into the bush, something shifted. We weren't rushing to build or make. We were just noticing.
We found chickweed tucked low in the shade, soft and bright green. Someone spotted a cluster of tiny mushrooms pushing through the leaf litter. We talked about which plants are safe to touch, to taste, to take home. Hands reached out gently, carefully - learning to forage with respect.
One child filled their basket with eucalyptus leaves, another collected seed pods and smooth stones. There were questions about roots, about bark, about why some leaves smell strong when you crush them.
By the fire, we brewed tea from herbs and sat quietly, just listening. Birdsong. Wind through the trees. The crackle of wood.
This is the work — helping children remember that nature isn't something to conquer or consume. It's something to notice, to learn from, to be held by.
They left with pockets full of treasures and a little more stillness in their step.
