⭐ MEET THE TEAM ⭐
Meet Steven, the newest Psychologist to join our team!

💭 Why did you choose this career?
"People are and will always be the most important thing in my life. Psychologists have the amazing opportunity to learn about, try to understand, and support people, especially when they’re struggling."

💭 What makes you jump out of bed each morning?
"My legs and coffee! And I guess showing up to my values."

💭 What do you love about what you do at Futures?
"It is a privilege to work in a space that values being a considerate and non-judgemental human."

💭 A fun fact about you!
"I have always loved all things fishing, and much of the time that means catching nothing and being present with myself or loved ones while watching a rod not move for hours."

What Is Play Therapy?

For children, emotions may be difficult to express verbally. Play is their universal language of communication. It is important for their development. They learn, develop and make sense of the world around them.

Play Therapy provides children with a therapeutic space to process difficult emotions, behaviour and experiences of trauma. It gives permission to therapeutically and safely explore and express their inner world and feelings, as well as also providing a space to resolve their challenges.

Benefits of play therapy:

- Access children’s difficult to express feelings and support them to express them and work through them.
- Provide a space for children to heal and recover from the impacts of trauma, at their pace, in a place where they experience unconditional positive regard.
- Gain support to develop strategies to cope with behavioural challenges, and support cognitive, social and emotional development.
- Foster empathy, deepening connection and relational growth with siblings, parents and other caregivers

⭐ MEET THE TEAM ⭐
Meet Elena, the newest Play Therapist to join our team!
💭 Why did you choose this career?
"I chose play therapy because I knew I always wanted to work with kids and think that advocating for mental health is really important to our community."
💭 What makes you jump out of bed each morning?
"Spending quality time with people that I love! Whether that's playing board games with family, taking the dogs for a walk with friends or engaging in something basketball related with my partner."
💭 What do you love about what you do at Futures?
"My favourite parts of the job are playing a small part in someone's therapeutic journey, experiencing those light bulb moments together as well as helping drive change and acceptance in the world. I love that we can work in a team to help individuals and their families through our different experiences and expertise (making some furry friends a long the way is an added bonus)."
💭 A fun fact about you!
"I have many interests including art & music but my biggest passion is sports, particularly basketball. I spent many years playing the game but now I am trying to give back by embarking on my new journey of becoming a referee."

Recently, we had to bid a very fond but sad farewell to our beautiful, generous and caring Senior Art Therapist 'JoJo'. After 9 years with Futures In Mind the NDIS no longer accept Jo's training and extensive experience as an Art Therapist, making it unviable for her to continue her practice with Futures. We are devastated for Jo and her clients. JoJo thank you for being our 'Mumma Bear', thank you for all the care you have given to our team and all the families you have helped along the way, and thank you for just being you. We miss you already 💚💙
