“Bad sleeper” is one of the phrases I hear most in my work. And I never take it at face value.

Not because I doubt how hard the nights are. I believe every word of that.

But “bad sleeper” isn’t a diagnosis. It’s what gets said when no one has explained what’s actually going on.

What I usually find is a child whose nervous system hasn’t learned to feel safe without connection at night. A child with a strong sleep association whose brain is doing exactly what it was taught. A child whose sleep pressure simply doesn’t match the schedule they’ve been given.

None of that is bad sleeping.

That’s a child, with a developing brain, doing exactly what developing brains do.
