Happy World Breastfeeding Week from the team at our Child, Youth and Family Health Service! 💛💛

These wonderful humans are here to help with your feeding journey, whatever this may look like!

Child Health Nurse and Lactation Consultant Jodie explains that "there is no one-size-fits-all feeding journey!"

"Child Health nurses work alongside families to provide evidence-based and personalised support, helping them achieve the shared goal of a healthy, thriving baby and a confident, supported parent."

Breastfeeding can be really challenging, and we certainly don’t want you to struggle through it alone, so we’re here to help with things like:

👶 Positioning and attachment
🍼 Expressing, pumping and mixed feeding
🥛 Concerns about milk supply
⚖️ Feeding, growth and weight gain
🤱 Sore ni***es, breast discomfort and common feeding challenges
💛 Building confidence and finding an approach that works for both parent and baby

You can connect with the team for some reassurance, guidance and individualised plans by calling the Child Health Access team on 1300 591 494.

The year was 1986.

Oprah Winfrey started hosting The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Kylie Minogue started her role as Charlene on Neighbours.

And Janet started her career at Sunshine Coast Health. 💛

Janet joined the team at Caloundra Health Service when it was much smaller!

In more recent years, Janet has played a key role in advancing Sunshine Coast Health's Virtual Care Services, expanding the reach and efficiency of our care.

Thank you, Janet, for sharing 4 decades of your life, skills, knowledge and talent with us all on the coast. 🌴

When Elaine was just three weeks old, mum Britney had come to accept that she wouldn’t be able to breastfeed.

“We had tried in the hospital and at home, but as a last try I booked into the Child, Youth and Family Health clinic and met Fiona.”

Fiona is one of many Child Health Nurses and lactation consultants at our Child, Youth and Family Health Service, where they support mums like Britney who need some extra help with breastfeeding. This can include observing a feed, helping with positioning and attachment, discussing milk supply or expressing, and developing a practical plan that works for both mum and baby.

“Fiona knew exactly what she was talking about, and I felt safe and comfortable with her. I went from pumping every three hours to exclusively breastfeeding Elaine, which made a huge difference to our daily lives!”

For World Breastfeeding Week this year, we’re aiming to "strengthen what works" by connecting families with the right support.

Give the Child Health Access team a call on 1300 591 494 to see how best we can support you. 💛💛

Got valuables?

Lovely! But please don’t bring them with you when you come to hospital.

We’re here to keep you safe, so it’s best that you keep your valuables safe by leaving them at home or giving them to a trusted support person for the duration of your stay or procedure.

Bring only the essentials and let us know if you aren’t able to make arrangements for the safe storage of anything valuable. 💎

TWINS! What are the chances? 👯

In Queensland, about 1 in 71 births are twins, so about a 1.4% chance!

The likelihood of twins increases if the person becoming pregnant is in their 30s or 40s, has a family history of fraternal twins or uses certain fertility medications or assisted reproductive treatments (like IVF).

Are you part of Queensland’s 1.4%? Join our next Twins Plus session where we explore self-care and mental health for twin parents:

Once a wool handler in a sheep shearing shed, before becoming a bicycle mechanic, then a pivot to professional cycling and next to nursing. 🐏

Now, Human of Health, Tim, is a Nurse Practitioner Endoscopist!

“I perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures while working closely with patients to investigate symptoms and diagnose conditions.”

Endoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a small camera to look inside the digestive system, allowing clinicians like Tim to identify things like ulcers, inflammation, polyps, sources of bleeding and signs of cancer.

After working throughout emergency, intensive care, mental health and inpatient wards, Tim found his passion for Endoscopy. A passion that meant an additional 3 years of intense study alongside ongoing shift work, and many, many practice hours to achieve his Advanced Practice Nursing credentials. 🩺

You’ve spent so much of your time and energy looking after our community, how do you look after yourself?

“I enjoy spending time with my wife, children, and our dogs. I also love keeping fit and healthy, and you'll often find me out riding or racing my bike.” 🚴‍♂️

Thank you for bringing your impressive breadth of experience and empathy to our health service, Tim. 💛

Medical misconception 👇

Occupational Therapists (OTs) only help people return to work.

“Occupation" in the context of an OT means anything that occupies a person's time and gives their life meaning. This might include cooking dinner, showering independently, playing with their kids, driving to the shops, returning to work or just getting a good night's sleep.

You’ll find OTs in all types of settings, like schools, hospitals, homes, mental health services, aged care, workplaces, disability services, rehab centres and palliative care, to name a few!

OT Olivia here leads the Brain Injury Community Integration Service, helping people who have suffered brain injuries find their path to independence.

Brain injuries can impact a person’s work, living arrangements, mobility and independence. OTs like Olivia assess how the injury is affecting each person’s life, before developing an individualised rehabilitation plan, connecting them with the right supports and strengthening their networks to maximise quality of life. 💛
