Quiet Mind Meditation

Quiet Mind Meditation Sarah is a meditation teacher based in Melbourne (Australia) and Founder of Quiet Mind Meditation (2009) and The Meditation Box (2022) Life is busy. And noisy.

After a long and challenging corporate career that came to a crossroad following the Global Financial Crisis .. Sarah took herself off to a meditation retreat and realised it was time to share her passion for meditation (her secret weapon in life) through Quiet Mind Meditation. Having meditated for more than 20+ years, Sarah is well aware of the challenges that life can present, and is eternally g

rateful that she learnt to meditate as a teenager .. and continued to meditate through all the ups and downs and meanderings. We are constantly bombarded with information .. words, thoughts, sights, sounds, smells .. that cause us to live in a state of perpetual edginess with no time to processes everything. But when we live on 'fast-forward' we miss the moments we have right now, and this can leave us with a residue of something missing. We disconnect from life and our sense of self. The ability to be both extremely relaxed physically and mentally, while remaining alert and awake, is one way to describe the meditative state. Research clearly shows that a regular meditation practice teaches us how to self manage our stress, which positively influences our inner biochemistry; improving our physical and emotional health, providing more restful sleep and improved energy levels alongside increased ability to cultivate positive emotions and a deeper understanding of who we are in our quietest moments.

This simple but very welcome practice, Palming the Eyes, is something I find helpful when my eyes are tired or I’m feeling weary. I also often start my meditation with this … to ‘quiet’ my eyes and feel into that familiar warmth and darkness, a delightful shift to stepping back from the world around me.

In my qigong studies I have just come across this same exercise with further insights into the benefits of the practice.

If you would like to experience a sense of Qi - your life energy - you might begin here.

+ bring your hands together and start rubbing them .. briskly and happily!
+ when they feel warm and tingly rest your palms gently across your eyes OR maybe your throat chakra, your heart or anywhere that could use a little loving touch

+ rest here 🩶

+ notice the sensations and aliveness in your hands .. maybe tingling, vibration, heat, ALIVENESS (Qi)

+ repeat as needed!

✨ a lovely tool for daily life to calm and rest

This week I’ve been enjoying hearing and exploring new voices as I continue to ‘Weave a practice’ combining movement/qigong and stillness/meditation.

I was up late one night, and as magic happens ✨found myself mesmerised by a video of Julia Robert, co-artistic director of the contemporary dance company ‘Humanhood’.

I watched it at least a dozen times.

Love her words and her movement … an expression of freedom, grounding, the human body and movement.

“We often want to move outward first. To reach further, expand more, take up space.

But before moving into space, we first learn how to meet the earth. Because grounding is not about staying still. It is about remaining in relationship.

No matter how movement changes, or how space shifts around us, there is something that continues to support us beneath it all.

Our body belongs to the earth.”

The sun might be out and the sky might be blue… but it is REALLY cold here today! My toes are freezing.🥶

And it certainly makes It feel as if the seasons are playing with us … we are most certainly moving through the final month of Winter, yet Spring is beginning to appear on the horizon (blue sky for days).

I have been reading a lot lately about the seasons through my Qigong studies and preparation for upcoming classes. I came across this beautiful teaching from The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine - one of the foundational texts of Chinese medicine, written over 2,000 years ago.

I am always inspired by the ancient traditions and wisdoms that invite us to look more closely at the natural world - and recognise that we are not separate from its rhythms.

The teaching to “not disturb the Yang qi” is a lovely reminder that not every season calls us into action. Sometimes the most nourishing thing we can do is protect our energy, create space for restoration, and allow what is forming beneath the surface to continue its quiet work.

So as we move through these final weeks of Winter, perhaps we can pause and ask:

What is this season inviting me to conserve?
What might need a little more rest before Spring arrives?

Stay warm 🌤️

APPRECIATION

This week’s HeartfulnessCard is Appreciation.

😆 and I Appreciate the help I got from my two support staff early this morning 🐶🐶

And every morning as I sit to meditate, I’m deeply aware of what a gift this practice is … it’s a ritual and rhythm that brings great calm, a quiet sense of presence, and true moments of joy - into ordinary days.

I am also deeply appreciative of the lineage that ‘sits’ with me each day … all the teachers and practitioners whose wisdom has been lovingly passed from one generation to the next. Every meditation holds a sense of sitting within a living thread, receiving and continuing something timeless.

May this week invite us to notice what we truly appreciate, and to let that appreciation deepen our hearts.

🙏🏼 I appreciate you and hope you find much to appreciate this week. xxSarah

Facebook reminded me today that Quiet Mind Meditation is 17 years old!

Like .. what?

Seventeen years of teaching meditation ... and more than thirty years of sitting on the cushion.

You might think I’d have settled into ‘my way’ of practising by now.

🤣 .. instead, I’d say this season of life has surprised me.

Over these past months I’ve been gently weaving Qigong into my daily practice alongside my seated meditation.

Qigong is an ancient practice that combines slow, rhythmic movement, mindful breathing and focused awareness. The word ‘qigong’ is often translated as ‘working with life energy’ - building, moving, storing our vital life force, or qi, to support health, calm and inner balance.

What I am love love loving .. is that qigong is also meditation and so my practice is being further nourished and enriched.

And at this stage of my life, that feels like exactly the practice I need.

Today’s carousel is a little reflection on that journey.
