VALID has published Tony Lang's legal advice on people with intellectual disability serving as Board members.

The advice reflects what many of us have seen for years: people with intellectual disability can, and do, serve effectively as Board members.

Self Advocacy Sydney is an organisation proudly run by people with intellectual disability, for people with intellectual disability for over 40 years.

The majority of Self Advocacy Sydney’s Board members are people with intellectual disability.

Our Board is living proof that with the right training, support and adjustments people with intellectual disability make excellent Board members.

Inclusive governance is not a future aspiration. It is a present reality, and one that strengthens organisations, sharpens decisions, and honours the principle of nothing about us without us, meaning that decisions should not be made without including the people they affect.

The lived experience of our Board members and staff is invaluable in creating an inclusive organisation. This is reflected in everything we do.

Self Advocacy Sydney at the Street Alive Parade Blacktown City Festival 2015

In 2015, Self Advocacy Sydney (SAS) joined the Street Alive Parade at the Blacktown City Festival, as part of the Access Advisory Sub Committee for Blacktown City Council.

The Committee’s job was to give advice to the Council about their Disability Inclusion Action Plan to help make Blacktown accessible and inclusive for everyone.

The parade celebrated:

- Different cultures of Blacktown

- The history of Blacktown

- Local community organisations

Today we continue to give feedback and have our voices heard to break down barriers and to create a more inclusive environment for the community.

Last week we held our Penrith Open Day!

Our Open Day was an opportunity for people to find out more about our programs and services, meet our Penrith team and hear from some of our clients.

We started the sessions with a presentation from our Penrith team, Angelo and Luke, who shared information about Self Advocacy Sydney programs and how we can support you.

Next, we heard from Self Advocates Luke and Shu, who shared their journeys with self advocacy, speaking up for themselves and gaining confidence.

Finally, we finished the sessions with fun Colour My Way art activities and board games.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fun and informative day.

On Monday we held our second Blacktown Plot Play session at Max Webber Library!

Our theme for this session was: Star.

A star is something important to you, it can be a person, place, thing or animal.

We started by coming up with a story all together.

For our story we chose Spiderman as the star.

Our story was about a dog stealing a car from Maaz, one of our Plot Play participants!

Maaz then teamed up with Spiderman to find his car and save the day.

Next, we created our own individual stories.

Spiderman was a popular theme this session, but we also heard stories about meerkats, Metallica, Japan, pets, and family members.

The stories ranged from hilarious to heartfelt.

We had a great time hearing each other’s stories and ideas.
