Self Advocacy Sydney attends The 1997 Disability Expo at the Panther’s Pavillion

You may recognise these iconic photos!

If you have been following Self Advocacy Sydney (SAS) for a while, you might have seen these photos before in reports, social media posts, and in booklets.

These photos have come to represent the Harris Park era of SAS from 1994 - 2000.

These photos feature staff and clients wearing merchandise especially made for the 1997 expo where they had the opportunity to share what SAS does to support people with intellectual disability.

Today, Self Advocacy Sydney continues to attend expos and events.

We share information about our programs and services and how we support people with intellectual disability to speak up, have their voices heard, and know their rights.

VALID has published Tony Lang's legal advice on people with intellectual disability serving as Board members.

The advice reflects what many of us have seen for years: people with intellectual disability can, and do, serve effectively as Board members.

Self Advocacy Sydney is an organisation proudly run by people with intellectual disability, for people with intellectual disability for over 40 years.

The majority of Self Advocacy Sydney’s Board members are people with intellectual disability.

Our Board is living proof that with the right training, support and adjustments people with intellectual disability make excellent Board members.

Inclusive governance is not a future aspiration. It is a present reality, and one that strengthens organisations, sharpens decisions, and honours the principle of nothing about us without us, meaning that decisions should not be made without including the people they affect.

The lived experience of our Board members and staff is invaluable in creating an inclusive organisation. This is reflected in everything we do.

Self Advocacy Sydney at the Street Alive Parade Blacktown City Festival 2015

In 2015, Self Advocacy Sydney (SAS) joined the Street Alive Parade at the Blacktown City Festival, as part of the Access Advisory Sub Committee for Blacktown City Council.

The Committee’s job was to give advice to the Council about their Disability Inclusion Action Plan to help make Blacktown accessible and inclusive for everyone.

The parade celebrated:

- Different cultures of Blacktown

- The history of Blacktown

- Local community organisations

Today we continue to give feedback and have our voices heard to break down barriers and to create a more inclusive environment for the community.
