How often do you pause and ask yourself, "What is my body trying to tell me?"

Many of us have learned to push through stress, ignore fatigue, and override our emotional and physical needs. Over time, this can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves and only noticing our needs when we're already overwhelmed.

Our bodies often provide important information long before we reach burnout, anxiety, or emotional exhaustion. Learning to recognise these early signals can help us respond more effectively, improve emotional regulation, and support overall wellbeing.

Small signals often come before big ones. The more we learn to listen, the better equipped we are to respond to what we need.

What is one way your body lets you know when it's time to slow down?

Learning disorders can affect how a person processes information, including reading, writing, maths, attention, and organisation.

These difficulties are not related to intelligence, and with the right assessment and support, individuals can better understand their learning profile and access appropriate strategies.

At MRP Psychological Services we provide psychological assessments for learning disorders for children, adolescents, and adults, along with evidence-based recommendations to support learning and wellbeing.

Working with children in the practice, we often explore the idea of a child’s platform—a term used by Mona Delahooke in Brain-Body Parenting.

It refers to the foundation of the nervous system: a child’s sense of safety, regulation, and readiness to engage with the world. When that platform is supported, children are better able to learn, connect, and cope.

What’s often overlooked is that this doesn’t disappear with age. The platform comes with us into adulthood, continuing to shape how we respond to stress, relationships, and everyday challenges.

Some days, things feel manageable. Other days, even small tasks can feel like a lot—often reflecting the state of that underlying platform.

At MRP Psychological Services, we support both children and adults to better understand and strengthen their unique platform—building awareness, regulation, and the conditions for meaningful change.

It’s perhaps no surprise this idea came up so often this week, with the Easter holidays approaching—a time that can bring both joy and increased demands on our nervous systems.

If this resonates, feel free to reach out to learn more about how we can support you.

When frightening events are widely reported in the media, it’s common for children and adolescents to become aware of them — whether through television, social media, school conversations, or overheard conversations at home. As children grow, their understanding of world events increases, and so can their questions, worries, and sense of uncertainty.

It’s not unusual to notice changes such as increased reassurance-seeking, difficulty sleeping, physical complaints (like headaches or stomach aches), or heightened sensitivity after exposure to distressing news. These responses are often a sign that a child is trying to process something that feels overwhelming.

Supportive, calm conversations can significantly reduce anxiety and help children feel safe. Consider the following:

• Ask what they know. Gently explore what they’ve heard and how they’re feeling.
• Provide age-appropriate information. Offer clear, simple explanations without unnecessary detail.
• Focus on safety and helpers. Highlight the people and systems in place that work to keep communities safe.
• Limit repeated exposure. Continuous news coverage can intensify fears, particularly before bedtime.
• Model calm reassurance. Children take emotional cues from the adults around them.

Most importantly, validate their feelings. Let them know it’s okay to feel worried or confused, and that their questions are welcome.

If anxiety begins to interfere with sleep, school, or daily activities, professional support can make a meaningful difference.

MRP Psychological Services is here to support families navigating these important conversations and to help children build resilience in an uncertain world.

If you’re concerned about your child or teen’s learning, attention, memory, or overall development, a Cognitive Assessment can provide valuable insights and clarity.

At our private psychology practice, we offer comprehensive cognitive assessments for children and adolescents, delivered in a warm, supportive, and client-centred environment.

What is a Cognitive Assessment?

A cognitive assessment is a structured evaluation that explores how a young person thinks, learns, problem-solves, remembers, and processes information. It looks at areas such as:
• Intellectual functioning
• Attention and concentration
• Memory
• Processing speed
• Language skills
• Executive functioning (planning, organisation, self-monitoring)

What is the purpose?

The goal of a cognitive assessment is to:
• Identify strengths and areas of difficulty
• Clarify learning or developmental concerns
• Assist with diagnostic clarification (where appropriate)
• Inform tailored intervention strategies
• Support applications for school-based accommodations or additional supports

We use a range of evidence-based clinical tools, carefully selected and tailored to your child’s specific presenting concerns. Every assessment is individualised to ensure we address the areas that matter most to your child and family.

Our approach is collaborative — we work closely with parents, caregivers, and (where appropriate) schools to ensure meaningful and practical recommendations are provided.

To make an enquiry or arrange an appointment, please contact our practice directly.

Parenting can be demanding at times, and caring for your own needs is not a luxury — it’s an essential part of supporting your child.

When parents are rested, supported and emotionally resourced, they are better able to respond with patience, warmth and consistency.

Looking after your own wellbeing helps regulate stress, improves decision-making, and strengthens the parent–child relationship.

Small acts of self-care, setting realistic expectations, and seeking support when needed can make a meaningful difference.

Supporting yourself is not taking away from your children — it supports your capacity to care for them.

🧸How Play Therapy Supports Children’s Emotional Wellbeing 🎨

Children don’t always have the words to explain how they feel — but they do know how to play.

Play Therapy is a well-established psychological intervention that uses play as a natural, developmentally appropriate way for children to express emotions, process experiences, and build coping skills.

Play Therapy is evidence-based and led by a trained mental health professional who carefully observes and supports the child’s emotional world through play.

✨ Play isn’t “just play” — it’s how children heal, grow, and make sense of their world.✨

If you’d like to learn more about how Play Therapy may support your child, feel free to get in touch.
