Our members are based in Hospitals, National Health organisations, private clinics, universities and in industry.

The ACPSEM has a mission to advance services and professional standards in medical physics and biomedical engineering for the benefit and protection of the community. The Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine or ACPSEM is a not for profit association of members who have careers in medical physics (either in the radiation oncology, radiology and/or nuclear medicine), biomedical engineering or radiopharmaceutical science. Some have research as their main focus whereas others are very much at the forefront of patient diagnosis and treatment. As with any medical profession they often work in teams, alongside medical doctors, radiation therapists and technicians. Keynote Presentation: Adapting to Changing Clinical Practice with Prof Ane Appelt

Join us in Brisbane from 22-25 November 2026 to hear Prof Appelt's insights on how evolving evidence, technologies, and treatment approaches are transforming clinical practice.

Prof Ane Appelt is a medical physicist, specialising in radiation oncology research and clinical trials. Her research focus is on lower GI cancer, lung cancer, reirradiation, and general radiotherapy outcome modelling for treatment personalization.

She is involved in and helps to lead radiotherapy trials, particularly in organ preservation for re**al cancer - she has co-lead one phase II dose-escalation trial in this setting.

Prof Appelt trained as a clinical physicist, concurrently with a PhD in Radiation Oncology, focusing on bioeffect outcome modelling. She now holds a Professorship in Clinical Medical Physics at Rigshospitalet and Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen.

Irena is a Nuclear Medicine Medical Physicist at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Health in Melbourne.

With a strong background in secondary and tertiary education, she brings extensive teaching and mentoring experience.
