Iron deficiencies are one of the most common deficiencies that I see in my practise.
Low iron affects taste, appetite, sleep, behaviour and general functioning. A lot of children are drinking too much milk which affects their absorption of iron. It’s important to try keep to 3 serves of dairy a day and try and separate dairy foods from iron rich foods as this will help improve absorption. On a side having vitamin c and iron together improves iron absorption.
If you have a fussy eater, poor sleeper or a child who drinks a lot of milk it may be worth looking at their iron levels and supplementing if needed.

Paediatricians across Australia are concerned about a jump in iron deficiency in young children due to too much cow's milk, and the need to better educate parents about the issue.

ARFID is more than “picky eating”. 💙

Some children have a very limited range of foods, experience significant anxiety around eating, or become extremely distressed when faced with unfamiliar foods.

While this can sometimes be dismissed as “fussy eating” or something they will simply grow out of, there may be much more going on underneath.

ARFID can be associated with:
✨ Sensory sensitivities
✨ Fear of choking, vomiting or becoming unwell
✨ Very low interest in food or eating
✨ Previous difficult or painful feeding experiences

And importantly, ARFID is not driven by concerns about body shape or weight.

If eating is causing significant stress for your child or family, or you’re concerned about their nutritional intake, food range or relationship with food, seeking support early can make a real difference.
