Real people, real beliefs about birth, and where they actually come from.

I asked two young women what one word *childbirth* brings to mind. And again what showed up before anything else was fear. They said it was "Scary." "Traumatic." "Doesn't feel safe."

So I asked them where they think this beleif comes from.

Social media. TikTok, Instagram, a constant feed of other people's worst birth stories, with none of the context. And after twenty years teaching this work, I've watched something shift in the past decade. Normal fear is turning into phobia for an entire generation before they've even lived it.

Here's the thing though: fear itself isn't the enemy. It's motivating. It builds a healthy respect for something genuinely intense — it's not called labour for nothing. What's missing is the other half of the story: the agency, the tools, the knowledge that let you meet that intensity instead of just dreading it.

That's the gap this series keeps finding, conversation after conversation. Not "birth is easy," but "you have more say in this than you think."

That swhy the She Birth book exists. There is something new and inspiring on every page. Something about the wisdom already sitting inside our bodies. If fear feels louder than fascination right now, that's exactly why I wrote it.

This wonderful couple's hospital-based births were marred by how they were treated by staff — not by the outcome itself.

This is something I talk about often: birth can be beautiful however it happens.

What we know going in, how we advocate for ourselves, and how clearly we've worked out our own values around birth. These are good predictors of a beautiful birth.

Robin & Robyn hope their children's and grandchildren's experiences will be better, and they know it matters, because birth ripples across generations.

That's why I wrote 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬. It's a comprehensive guide to making birth beautiful — it's about values, and weaving them into your birth experience so you can find calm, connection, bonding and empowerment.

It's full of stories, and evidence-based tools that provide real pain relief and help reduce c-sections and inductions.

If you or someone in your life is expecting, grab a copy, or better yet, gift one because the birth ahead of you deserves the same care you'd want passed down to the next generation.

The more we arm women and partners with the knowledge to create the space for a values led oxytocin fuelled birth the better prepared they are for whatever happens.

𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟭𝟯-𝟭𝟵. A few weeks ago I spoke with Angela Catterns on ABC North Coast about my new book - 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬: Your practical guide to a beautiful birth.

We talked abut the rates of trauma in Australian women (and across the world) and how much of the trauma women experience is preventable. 70% of Birth trauma is preventable and we know how to get there - Through continuity of care, listening to women and providing a woman centred environment to give her every opportunity to have a beautiful birth however it happens.

Every woman deserves to be heard and believed when it comes to her birth experience and there is support available.

You can listen to the full conversation on ABC North Coast Saturday Breakfast from June 27th.

Real people, real beliefs about birth, and where they come from.

Meet Rebecca, a She Births mum, sharing the story that reshaped how she sees birth.

"I was so scared of birth when I was younger... a lot of it came from family history" Inheriting the fear that birth is dangerous and highly medicalised. That's the story so many of us inherit. Is it any wonder we grow up afraid?

Then Rebecca became a yoga teacher. She started watching other women approach birth differently and found there was another story available to her. One where birth is a rite of passage. Powerful. Enriching and hers to own.

The shift from fear to fascination is exactly why She Births exists. To bring these inherited stories into the light, and give women the space to go deeper and uncover who they really are in birth. And lets face it they're all Amazing!

Rebecca did She Births with Nadine, because once she was excited about birth, she wanted to know everything.

"Everyone can be a birth educator." Not in a formal sense — just in the little conversations that spread hope, one street corner at a time.

In s*x education at the all-girls Catholic high school I attended, at the ripe age of fourteen, we watched our first childbirth video.

I am pretty sure they were showing us the footage in the hope of discouraging us from having s*x. Honestly, it was a pretty good deterrent.

The class sat in silence, eyes wide and mouths open, as a baby emerged from an actual va**na.

The woman on the TV screamed and panted, writhing in pain. She was lying flat on her back on a narrow hospital bed. Stainless steel bars imprisoned her while she was being yelled at to push harder and harder. She looked back at the doctor and midwives with fear and self-doubt.

Most girls screamed or laughed hysterically, declaring that it was the most disgusting thing they had ever seen.

I sat there, stunned. A few tears ran down my face and I quickly wiped them away.

Then the words quietly fell out of my mouth: "That was amazing."
This, of course, led to even more roars of laughter. 😅

The She Births book is finally here - and our first celebration of the book tour was at the beautiful bookshop in Bondi.

Recorded live at the launch, this special episode holds the whole night: my family, colleagues, collaborators, and so many She Births families I've known for close to two decades. After four years writing She Births: Your practical guide to a beautiful birth, this was the moment it all became real.

I share the stage with one of my dearest friends, - writer, musician and performer and poet of MADRE. I had the honour of being the doula at both of Jessy's births. Those precious stories are in a previous podcast episode called, Can birth be spiritual?

Together we talk about the book, the inner work it took to bring it into the world, and the mission behind it all - restoring the sacredness of birth and creating a beautiful birth whatever unfolds. We go deep on matrescence, birth trauma, and why the way women are spoken to matters so much. And we laugh a lot.

WHO TOLD YOU THAT? 🎥

I chatted with Sophia in Bondi and asked her what she really thinks about childbirth.

Her answer? “Intimidating, but beautiful at the same time. A privilege. An experience like no other.”

So I asked the question this whole series is built on — who told you that?

Her mum. Sophia grew up hearing birth described as intense and a little scary, yes… but also rewarding, sacred, beautiful. And you can hear it in how she talks about her own future birth: she wants it as natural as she can, medical help if she needs it, and zero judgment either way.

These interviews are so interesting! Sophia believes a beautiful, empowering birth is possible. And that is rarer than it should be. Most people don’t walk around holding that belief anymore.

So the question I’m chasing across this series: where do our beliefs come from — our mums, our conversations, the stories we absorb — and where are all the negative stories coming from? And how do we keep spreading hope and agency?

That’s the mission. One conversation at a time. 🤍

Spreading birth education via the She Births book.

On the street with — changing birth, one conversation at a time.
