‘There are many emotions involved [after surviving a heart event], but ambiguous loss usually plays a role in the way patients feel about the situation moving forward. They’ve lost something very precious to them, which is believing that they’re strong enough to live and that their body will do what they need it to do, when they need it to. Suddenly, that’s gone. They will never get it back.
It’s an innocence that we all have to varying degrees. We know we’re going to die one day, but not today. There’s a grieving process in that!’
I know this firsthand. My own family has lived through it, and it’s something I spoke about in In A Heartbeat — a book that isn’t just about surviving a heart event, but about what comes after. The emotional toll. The grief. The adjustment. The resilience. It’s filled with real, raw experiences from survivors, their loved ones and professionals who support them.
📖 Inside, you’ll find:
✨ An interview with me, where I talk about the emotional weight of a heart event, both as a professional and as someone who’s lived it.
✨ The opening account of the book, where the counsellor in the story? That’s me! Because even those of us trained to support others aren’t immune to the unexpected.
✨ A dedicated resource section with contacts (including ours!) for those needing support.
A huge thank you to for bringing this book to life and giving space to these important stories ❤️💙
