Did you know there are two main types of dry eye conditions?

ADDE: Aqueous Deficient Dry Eyes – which is simply defined as a reduction in the production of tears from the lacrimal gland.

EDE: Evaporative Dry Eyes – which is the loss of the lipid layer from the surface of the tear film where there is a normal production of tears. This type of dry eye can be confusing as the eyes are still watering but due to the loss of the protective lipid layer, it is unable to retain moisture on the surface and still feels irritated.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction MGD is the result when the Meibomian glands cease to function optimally. MGD is associated with EDE. These blocked glands can no longer secrete the oils necessary to maintaining a healthy tear film.

MGD is often thought to be the leading cause of dry eye disease. If MGD is left untreated for an extended period of time, permanent damage to the eyes may occur.

Although, dry eyes are broadly classified into these two categories, they are not mutually exclusive and you can have a combination of the two.

Eating certain foods can help with dry eyes. These include:

1. Foods rich in potassium such as bananas, sweet potatoes, potatoes, white beans, yogurt and soybeans.

2. Foods rich in antioxidants such spinach, kale, Goji berries and blueberries to protect the eyes from free radicals damage.

3. Omega 3 for anti-inflammatory effects in foods such as cold-water fish, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, chia seeds, palm oil and soybean oil.

4. Zinc helps Vitamin A create a pigment melanin which protects our eyes. Fish, legumes, liver, mushrooms, sunflower seeds and whole grains are rich in zinc. As our body doesn’t store zinc, it is important to get enough from daily dietary intake.

5. Water is essential for keeping our body function properly and eyes are no exception to this. To keep our eyes hydrated an intake of 8 to 10 glasses of water is recommended.

Presbyopia: it happens to the best of us!

Once we hit around the age of 40, our intraocular lens loses its elasticity leading to blurry vision at near. We find ourselves holding things further away to see.

There’s a rumour going around town that Hannaford Eyewear is under new management. It seems Thao’s new hairdo after her hair donation to charity late June has gotten everyone confused! 😁

To reassure the community: there have been no changes.

Grant and Thao Hannaford continue to own and lead our independent family practice, just as we have for more than 22 years. Our commitment to personalised eye care, our team and our community remains exactly the same.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. 💕

It’s a 6pm finish today. Thao and Grant’s children in tow having spent the day at the practice since 7:30am. It’s been a long day.

Ly helped Grant put in the new consultation chair and then worked in the lab. He’s been working as an optical mechanic since he was 15 and is hoping to study engineering next year after his HSC. Yen did the odd job here and there like shredding and filing.

We often hear about the sacrifices people make in small businesses. What doesn’t get spoken about enough is the sacrifices the family makes. Hannaford Eyewear was raised by a village of family and friends who gave Thao and Grant the time they needed to grow a healthy practice. We are thankful for their support and roles.

Small business is not a 9 to 5 Monday to Friday job. Grant and Thao are always working to be better for you because you deserve it. So even if you don’t see them, they are working on optimising solutions for your eye care.

Flashback of Grant and Thao before they began their practice! Did you know they first met in Nepal on an eye care aid project with Rotary Australia? They later became Rotary members and are both Paul Harris Fellows in recognition for their work in both Nepal and Mongolia.

Family practices are unique, challenging and rewarding at the same time. There is freedom to practice the way we want in order to best service the community. It has also allowed both Grant and Thao to pursue further education so they are always better practitioners for you. They now also work with industry to support fellow practitioners via the Academy of Advanced Ophthalmic Optics.

You have supported us from when Grant and Thao were in their mid twenties starting out to now with their eldest son in his HSC year. We have so much gratitude for our patients who have trusted us for over 22 years. Without you we would not be here, we are blessed and eternally thankful.

We were saddened to read today’s reports highlighting the pressures optometrists are experiencing in some corporate practice environments.

Every optometrist, regardless of where they work, enters the profession to provide the highest standard of eye care. They deserve the time, professional autonomy and support needed to do so.

As an independent family practice, we are grateful that for more than 22 years we have been able to put our patients first, invest in our team and remain committed to personalised, community-based eye care.

We hope the current discussion leads to positive change across the profession so that all optometrists can continue to provide the quality care Australians deserve.
