Not sure which fertility supplements are right for you?

With so many options available, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. Here's what the evidence supports.

For women trying to conceive, a daily supplement containing at least 400 mcg of folic acid is recommended to help reduce the risk of neural tube defects, along with 150 mcg of iodine to support healthy thyroid function.(1)

For men, fertility-boosting nutrients such as vitamins C, E and folic acid, as well as zinc and selenium, have been linked to improved s***m quality. These are present in citrus fruits, leafy greens, eggs and nuts. If you’re finding it difficult to obtain enough nutrients from your diet and are considering fertility supplements, we recommend consulting with your GP or fertility specialist to see what’s right for you.

That said, supplements are only one piece of the puzzle. They can't replace the benefits of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, both of which are important in supporting fertility.

Our team can help you and your partner identify the supplements, nutrition and lifestyle strategies that are most appropriate for your individual fertility journey.

Around one-third of fertility patients are dealing with a male factor issue, and a semen analysis is one of the most informative and accessible tests we have to assess it.

In part 1 of his latest blog, fertility specialist Dr Alon Talmor breaks down what each parameter of a semen analysis means, and what it tells us about your fertility potential.

Stay tuned for part 2, where he explores practical ways to improve your s***m health and, in turn, your semen analysis results.

As embryologists, we hold more than cells in our hands – we hold hope.

That’s why we bring our full expertise, the latest science and just as much heart to every single egg, s***m and embryo in our care.

Because families bring joy to life, and that’s what our work is all about.

For years, preconception health has focused almost entirely on women – their folate intake, weight, smoking, alcohol and mental health optimisation before pregnancy. Meanwhile, men have largely been reduced to a semen analysis and a reminder not to smoke or drink too much before trying to conceive.

A recent review in The Lancet suggests society has been overlooking half the equation. The evidence shows that paternal obesity, smoking, alcohol use, stress, trauma and mental illness may influence offspring health. In other words – his health matters too.

Modern preconception care often places responsibility for pregnancy outcomes almost entirely onto women. Biologically, this doesn't add up.

Reproductive medicine has always involved two patients. So it's only natural that preconception care should, too.

An embryo transfer marks the final stage of an IVF cycle. While the procedure itself typically takes around 10 minutes, it's a carefully coordinated process involving your fertility specialist and embryology team.

Dr Emilie Robertson explains what you can expect on the day:

✨ You'll be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder, which helps provide a clearer ultrasound view of the uterus during the procedure.
✨ A speculum is gently inserted so your fertility specialist can clearly see the cervix.
✨ A fine, flexible catheter is passed through the cervix to access the uterus.
✨ Meanwhile, your embryologist prepares your embryo by loading it into an ultra-fine transfer catheter.
✨ Using ultrasound guidance, your fertility specialist places the embryo into the uterus with precision.
✨ Once the transfer is complete, the embryo remains in the uterus, where it can begin the process of implantation.

Every embryo transfer is the result of close collaboration between your fertility specialist and embryology team, with every step focused on giving your embryo the best possible start.

For same-sex male couples and single men, building a family is one of the most intentional paths to parenthood, requiring careful decisions, thoughtful planning and trusted support.

While there's no single version of what a journey to parenthood should look like, we've outlined some of the steps to expect.

If you're thinking about becoming a parent, the starting point is always the same – a conversation with a fertility provider so you can ask questions and explore your options.

If you'd like to start that conversation with the Newlife IVF team, call (03) 8080 8933.

It’s wonderful to see members of our Newlife IVF team at The Fertility Society of Australia & New Zealand's (FSANZ) 2026 Annual Conference in Canberra this week. 💛

Our doctors and wider team are coming together with fertility specialists from across Australia to share ideas, learn from one another and contribute to the conversations shaping the future of fertility care.

Dr Natasha Pritchard presented on important topics that look beyond conception, including the impact of IVF on breastfeeding and how caesarean sections can affect future fertility.

Our team also shared their research through a number of poster presentations, exploring areas such as fertility treatment, donor genetic risk, s***m donor profiles and genetic testing in IVF.

We’re incredibly proud of our team for continuing to ask questions, build knowledge and look for ways to improve the fertility journey for our patients – today and into the future.

Standard IVF insemination and ICSI (intracytoplasmic s***m injection) are two techniques used to achieve fertilisation during fertility treatment. The key difference between them lies in how the egg is fertilised.

In conventional IVF, the egg is placed in a dish with around 100,000 motile s***m and left for several hours, allowing a s***m to naturally pe*****te the egg’s outer layers and fertilise it.

In ICSI, a single s***m is injected directly into the egg. This is performed under a microscope by skilled embryologists using fine micromanipulation tools. ICSI is typically used when s***m are unable to pe*****te the egg on their own – for example, in cases of male infertility.

Following either procedure, if fertilisation is successful, the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus in the hope that it leads to a pregnancy.
