You know sometimes you just need to feel like you've got someone in your corner, egging you on, saying helpful things? Like a little angel on your shoulder, or a coach whispering in your ear?

Well - what if we made that a real life thing we can see and feel?

I love using sock puppets as a tangible symbol for our positive self talk or "Inner Coach". We can literally pop it on our hand and use it to talk to ourselves. And they are so fun to make!

Using visual supports in our nature based social groups.

One of the many ways we scaffold and accommodate different learning styles.

Having a visual to reference can be a great support in the process of negotiating and decision-making as a group, especially where "theory of mind" is a challenge.

For example, referencing the visual can help us understand and communicate to each other, the different ideas we each have in our mind of what the fire shape will look like and what steps and materials we might need to make it. This helps us to agree on a "group plan" that matches our ideas.

Baobab Bushrangers in Castlemaine is back for Term 2 2026!

Our nature-based social groups provide a fun and supportive space for children to build social skills, confidence, and connection — all while exploring the great outdoors. We help them navigate real-life social challenges in a supportive environment.

Using a neuro-affirming, trauma-informed, and play-based approach grounded in the DIR-Floortime model, we incorporate concepts from the ā€œSocial ThinkingĀ® Curriculumā€ to offer flexible tools for social interaction.

We recognise that socialising and self-expression look different for every child. Rather than teaching prescribed behaviours, we focus on helping young verbal learners develop the skills they need to become flexible social thinkers and problem solvers.

PROGRAM

Our groups offer engaging and fun activities that are tailored to suit the children’s specific interests, skills and challenges. Each session includes group games and collaborative activities interwoven with opportunities for problem solving and collaboration, offering opportunities to develop their ā€˜Social Thinking’ skills.

Activities may include:

Shelter building
Art and craft
Fire-making
Cooking
Sensory play
Rope skills
Making swings or tools
Structured group games
Supported collaborative play

Here's a fun way we snucks in some handwriting practice in the lead up to Easter.

Reusable water balloons work so well as the "eggs". Endlessly reusable, and heaps of space for hiding clues or treasures inside.
