We teach our kids to brush their teeth twice a day to prevent cavities. 🦷 But what are we teaching them about looking after their spines? 🎒
Spinal hygiene starts early. Long before we experience adult back stiffness, we load our kids up with backpacks that feel like they're filled with bricks. Over time, that daily heavy lifting can lead to poor posture, joint strain, and chronic aches.
If you want to protect your child's spinal hygiene, start with a quick "Schoolbag Check."
Here are 4 non-negotiable rules for backpack safety:
1️⃣ The 10% Rule: A schoolbag should never weigh more than 10% of your child’s body weight. (If they weigh 30kg, keep the bag under 3kg!).
2️⃣ Always Double-Strap: "One-strapping" forces the spine to curve sideways to balance the uneven load. Insist on both straps, every time.
3️⃣ Keep it High & Tight: Adjust the shoulder straps so the bag rests against their mid-back, not sagging down past their lower back or hips.
4️⃣ Pack Strategically: Place the heaviest items (like laptops or textbooks) closest to their spine, and lighter items toward the outside.
But while you're busy teaching them spinal hygiene... who is looking after yours? 🧐
As adults, our "heavy schoolbags" look like laptops, groceries, toddlers, stress, and hours of sitting. Just like your teeth, your spine needs a daily care routine to release tension, decompress joints, and prevent "decay."
That’s why we’re hosting our "Brush Your Spine" Workshop.
We’ll teach you simple, realistic movement habits to undo the daily grind, release stubborn tension, and keep you moving pain-free.
