What does a skin cancer look like through a tattoo?
Kinda depends is the answer - but basically like a skin cancer playing hide and seek!!

This example shows the cancer clearly growing through the pigment which meant the clues were harder to pick.

Often the clues that you will notice as a patient are more of the physical symptoms:
- itch
- discomfort
- bleeding

I do think its a good idea if you have a lot of spots to get any areas of skin you are planning to tattoo extensively to your doctor before the tattoo artists do their thing!

Infiltrating Basal Cell Cancers can be aggressive at times!

They can have difficult to assess margins so it’s not unusual to get positive margins when removing them

They can invade nerves and nearby structures far more often than other types of BCC

They are also more likely to return even if you think you have clear margins!

Wounds that are slow to heal are always suspicious and unfortunately sometimes these ones are au subtle!

Hallmarks of SCC for patients?

They are sore
They typically grow fast
They can be scaly

Hallmarks for docs to keep their eyes peeled for?
White circles on dermoscopy!
Hair pin vessels
Ulceration

Remember not everything with ONE of these hallmarks is def an SCC
Aaaaand

Not every SCC will have all of these features

You have to take the whole picture into consideration

Alright why see someone who uses a dermatoscope?
Answered for the 1000th time

without dermoscopy I am willing to die on the hill that if you called that a BCC you are just guessing

with dermoscopy you can see clearly not only that its a BCC but it has features which suggest it may be nodular (which means creams, lotions and potions would be less effective!)

wait till its obvious with the naked eye?
By then you need a much bigger hole in your leg which leads to more pain, misery, larger scar, greater risks of infection and wound break down and just generally being miserable.

Dermoscopy is king
I will absolutely die on this hill

We know that patients that get lots of skin cancers get good at picking them over time.

I think we can shortcut that and teach you when to go see a doctor and hopefully give you a fighting chance

You won’t find all of them

But at least you’ll learn what some of the more common ones look like and hopefully you will be able to advocate effectively for yourselves!

This little BCC is an easy pick up once you magnify it and for sure it’s much better to find it early than let it get bigger (which it inevitably wants to do!)

These squamous cell cancers can grow fast and cause lots of havoc

Watch out for similar spots behaving badly on you!
