Twenty years ago, the foundations of RetireAustralia’s communities were already taking shape.

New neighbours were meeting for the first time, conversations were beginning over cups of tea, and a shared vision of connection and belonging was coming to life.

From those early days, our focus has always been on creating welcoming communities where residents feel supported and at home. While our villages have grown over the past two decades, that commitment remains unchanged.

As we celebrate 20 years of RetireAustralia, we’re reflecting on where the journey began and the many friendships, memories and community connections that have followed.

The cheers of State of Origin supporters echoed through Arcadia Retirement Living while the aroma of French-inspired cuisine and the clink of glasses set the scene for a memorable Bastille Day dinner at Boambee Gardens Retirement Village At Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village at Bargara, a birthday celebration brought residents together to share stories, laughter and a very special milestone.

Beyond the community gates, residents from Glengara Aged Care Apartments and Murray Gardens Retirement Village set off on adventures of their own, enjoying a change of scenery. As winter continued, festive decorations, hearty meals and plenty of Christmas cheer transformed many communities for Christmas in July celebrations.

2. Bowls: Enjoy some friendly competition, plenty of laughs and a chance to connect with neighbours on the green.

3. Happy Hour: The perfect opportunity to catch up with friends, meet new people and share good conversation.

4. Arts and craft: Whether you're painting, card making or creating a handmade bookmark, it's a great way to get creative and have fun.

5. Yoga: Take time to slow down, stretch and recharge with a relaxing session focused on wellbeing.

“I love working here. It was the best decision to come back. When I walk through the doors, I feel like I'm home," says Sonya, Personal Care Attendant at Lincoln Grove Retirement Village

“After being in the role for 7 years I left and moved into disability support work because I thought it was time to try something new. But something was missing. I missed it. I didn't have the same connection with the residents or the team.

"When I came back to Lincoln Grove, I knew straight away I'd made the right choice. The look on their faces when they saw me again just brightened my day.

“As a Personal Care Attendant, I visit around 15 residents each day. I help with medications, breakfast and getting ready for the day, but the most important thing is making sure they keep their independence. It's important to me that I'm not stepping on their toes. Caring is about supporting people while honouring their dignity.

People are often surprised by how independent residents are and how connected the community is. There’s always someone stopping for a chat or joining an activity.

"It really feels like a family. And that's what keeps me here."

Over the years, Mark Brown has become one of those people every village relies on. Need help carrying groceries inside? Mark's there. Left something behind on the bus? Mark already knows who it belongs to. Need an extra hand setting up an event or checking on a neighbour? Mark is often the first to step forward.

It's this quiet dependability that has made him such a valued part of the Tarragal Glen Retirement Village community for nearly 39 years.

Nominated for the 2025 RA Family Award, Mark was recognised not just for what he does, but for the way he does it, with kindness, reliability and genuine care for the people around him.

As RetireAustralia's longest-serving team member prepares to retire, his legacy won't be found in a job description. It will be found in the relationships he built, the residents he supported and the countless quiet acts of service that made Tarragal Glen feel like home.

“I walked in, looked out over the bay, and said, ‘This is it. This is going to be my home.

“Four years later, I’ve never doubted it. This was the best thing I’ve ever done. I raised 5 kids and moved all over South Australia with my husband. We were always starting again, always making new friends. So, asking for help later in life … that wasn’t easy for me. But here, it doesn’t feel like I’m losing independence. One of the staff said to me, ‘Margaret, please use me. I’m here to help.’ That stayed with me. Now I join in when I want. Painting afternoons, dinners, little things like neighbours bringing jam. And if I need quiet, I just go back to my room.

“My daughter says she can sleep at night knowing I’m safe. And I feel like myself.

“I’m 90 now. For me, it’s been perfect.”
