What is emotional sobriety?

When Rachel first left rehab, she thought getting sober would solve everything. But despite no longer using substances, she realised she was still struggling with the same emotions, thought patterns and behaviours that had fuelled her addiction.

In this video, Rachel shares her experience of discovering emotional sobriety and the role it has played in her recovery. She talks about the importance of working a recovery program, developing self-awareness, learning healthier coping strategies and continuing to do the inner work that supports long-term sobriety.

Because recovery is about more than just putting down the drink or drug. It’s about creating a life you no longer need to escape from.

It is marketed as celebration, connection, success, relaxation, reward, and even self care. We see it at sporting events, festivals, concerts, restaurants, cinemas, on social media, and through delivery apps. It has become woven into some of life’s biggest moments including birthdays, weddings, holidays, promotions, and catch ups with friends.

Yet alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is strong evidence that it causes cancer in humans.

Despite this, alcohol advertising rarely focuses on the risks. Instead, it sells a lifestyle, a feeling, and a sense of belonging.

For people living with alcohol addiction or in recovery, this constant stream of marketing can be especially challenging. When an addictive substance is presented as the key to fun, celebration, and connection, it can reinforce the belief that alcohol is an essential part of everyday life.

The question is not whether alcohol advertising works. It clearly does.

The question is whether we have become so accustomed to seeing it that we no longer stop to question the message.

Yesterday, we sat down with Kristy to talk about her recovery journey, the support she has received through The Freedom Room, and how her life has changed in sobriety.

Kristy brings such a thoughtful and grounded perspective to recovery. Her humility, kindness, and willingness to share both the challenges and the triumphs of her journey make her story relatable and meaningful.

We are grateful to have Kristy as part of our community and thankful that she was willing to share her experience with us.
