What does it really take for U.S.-grown cannabis flower to succeed in Europe?

In his latest article for Business of Cannabis, SOMAÍ Founder and Interim CEO Michael Sassano breaks down the economics behind exporting flower into Germany, the UK and Australia — and why attractive retail prices don’t necessarily translate into attractive margins for producers.

From importer and distributor margins to pharmacy and clinic costs, a significant share of the final retail price can remain within the channel. The key question is therefore not simply where cannabis sells for more — but how much of the value chain an operator controls.

Michael also explores why EU-GMP infrastructure, local distribution and vertical integration can fundamentally change the equation for companies looking at Europe as a long-term market rather than a short-term trading opportunity.

The reclassification of cannabis in the United States could have an impact far beyond its domestic market.

In his article for CannaReporter, Michael Sassano, Founder and Interim CEO of SOMAÍ, explores how this shift could accelerate medical research, cross-border investment and collaboration between US operators and established European pharmaceutical platforms.

As the global medical cannabis industry enters its next stage, regulated markets, EU-GMP standards and international distribution networks will play an increasingly important role in bringing cannabinoid-based medicines to patients worldwide.

Our Business Support Manager, Judi McDonald, was proud to represent SOMAÍ Australia at the Medicinal Cannabis Reform Roundtable in Canberra, hosted by Cannabis Council Australia.

The roundtable brought together key voices from across the medicinal cannabis sector — including cultivators, manufacturers, prescribers, pharmacists, and patient advocates — for an important discussion on the future of reform in Australia.

The conversation focused on strengthening product quality, clinical governance, real-world evidence, and patient-centred access to regulated medicinal cannabis.

We’re proud to be part of these industry discussions as Australia continues to shape a stronger, safer, and more consistent framework for patients.

Europe is no longer a secondary conversation in global cannabis.

In his latest byline for Krautinvest, Michael Sassano explores why 2026 is becoming a defining year for cannabis M&A, with global operators increasingly looking toward Europe and other regulated medical markets for their next phase of growth.

As countries including Germany, the UK, Australia, Poland, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Ireland continue to develop, the momentum is becoming clear: regulated medical cannabis markets are creating patient access, business opportunity, and stronger global infrastructure.

For SOMAÍ, this shift reinforces the importance of building a truly international platform — combining EU-GMP manufacturing, global distribution, and a broad portfolio of cannabinoid-based medicines designed for fast-growing medical markets.
