What is IBS?

Unfortunately, it’s a condition that many, knowingly or unknowingly suffers with on a daily basis. It can be debilitating and decrease ones quality of life. The symptoms includes bloating, cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation, just to mention a few.

This condition can lead to further complications and cause issues such as fatigue, insomnia, mood swings, joint pain, headaches and much more. This often comes down to nutrient deficiencies, poor nutrient absorption or a poor gut micro biome.

If you want to know more about IBS, click the link in my profile, go to my website and read my new blog “What is IBS and why does it seem to affect so many people”. This is an introduction as to why some develop IBS, what is causing it and a potential dietary strategy to help relieve the symptoms!

April is the month of IBS awareness. It is unfortunately a very common and debilitating condition that affects 10-15% worldwide with 2 out of 3 sufferers being females.

IBS has been associated with several other conditions such as dysbiosis, SIBO, food intolerances and gastro. The overall picture between severity and recurrence are closely related to gut health.

Food is one of the biggest triggers for symptoms to flare up, but this doesn’t always have to be the same for everyone. Some have a lower tolerance than others. Meaning that food most commonly known to cause the classic IBS symptoms might not be affecting some while others can’t even look at these foods and bloating begins.

IBS is very individualised. As a holistic practitioner, other factors such as lifestyle, stress, work/life balance, exercise, environmental factors and so much more are vital to assess, to understand the true underlying cause for YOUR IBS journey.

IBS can’t be cured but it can be controlled and managed through dietary and lifestyle measures.

I love a good smoothie. This one I call the “Detox Smoothie”. It is filled with awesome nutrients that help to upregulate your liver detoxification processes, support your immune system and gut health, plus has anti-inflammatory properties. Have this in the morning before work or in the afternoon as a ‘pick me up’ snack. Either or, just add this to your recipe book
