A quick IFS explainer ⤵️ (full detail in the carousel)

1. IFS asserts that the mind is naturally subdivided into multiple sub-personalities, or ‘parts’. These parts hold their own beliefs, interests and natural strengths (even genders) and together, they form our inner system or ‘family’. Our parts can be experienced through our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, or mental images.

2. As we develop, while trauma and attachment injuries don’t ‘create’ our parts, they do shape them, typically forcing them into more extreme roles. In IFS, the three distinct roles parts take on are as ‘exiles’, ‘managers’ and ‘firefighters’.

3. Our exiles are the young parts of us that have absorbed and taken on the effects of trauma. They continue to hold the fear, sense of worthlessness and vulnerability of that earlier time, and are therefore typically exiled by the system in order to keep these extreme beliefs and emotions suppressed.

4. On the other hand, our managers and firefighters are our protectors, with our managers proactively working to prevent any further hurt and rejection, eg. through controlling, perfecting and people-pleasing, and our firefighters serving as the last wall of defence. If a wound is touched upon, they’ll jump in at any cost to control and extinguish the pain - think the self-harming, bingeing, and rageful ‘parts’. But regardless of the strategy or outcome, they all have one pure intention: to protect us.

5. When there are exiles living with us, the whole system effectively becomes organised around suppressing and keeping the pain of the exiles out of conscious awareness or from being re-experienced. It becomes fragile and vulnerable to triggering.

6. At the same time, IFS recognises that everyone also has a core, untouched Self, and in accessing this Self, it becomes a powerful reparative + healing agent. ✨

Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, or emotion regulation?

Are you being challenged in your parenting by constant triggering, overwhelm, reactivity, anger/rage, guilt, shame, or an overwhelming sense of helplessness and hopelessness? Are you trying to accomplish the mammoth task of parenting, while dealing with unresolved trauma of your own?

Have you been sensing that it’s time to work on your own wounds, so that you can show up in the way you want for yourself, for your children, in your relationships, or in your purpose? Have you been getting the sense that your inner child(ren) are in need of healing?

**Experience the healing benefits of RTT & IFS 1:1**

I am offering a BETA program for women who are you interested in delving deeper, and healing some of these wounds so that they can begin their return to greater wholeness - back to who they are really meant to be, and, if you’re a mum - to begin to parent more from your Self, rather than from your wounds.

Beginning as a coach training in NLP, then to my RTT practitioner training, I have been using parts work for several years and am so passionate about this way of working. I believe it is THE most effective ongoing therapy for resolving deep, including preverbal, wounds (on the other side of the coin, RTT is wonderful because of the degree of healing and deep subconscious change that typically occurs in just a single session). And so, as a soon-to-be-certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) Trauma Treatment practitioner - I have decided to create a program so that women can benefit from the combined power of both (currently at beta pricing).

See the post for further details, and send me a DM if you’re interested in learning more or to book in for this 1:1 program (limited spots available for obvious reasons). Alternatively, feel free to book in a 20-min chat if you’d like to chat further.

When we face a threat - whether ‘real’ or perceived, from either outside of us or internal (a thought) - key areas and functions of the brain are inhibited, compromising the successful encoding of the traumatic experience into a conscious, narrative memory, aka into declarative memory. Effectively, successful memory processing fails.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🧠One key part of the brain that is inhibited when we react to a perceived threat is the hippocampus - the memory processing centre of the brain, responsible for processing an experience - organising, contextualising and sequencing it - prior to it being ‘remembered’. The second key region that dysfunctions under times of perceived threat is the prefrontal cortex, responsible for higher level thought processes and regulation of emotion and ultimately for witnessing the experience as it happens.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When these key areas and functions are compromised or shut down ⛔️ the brain isn’t able to successfully store the experience in the form of a memory or narrative that we can simply recall voluntarily. Instead, the experience is encoded in the form of raw data - as implicit memory - essentially stored in the form of feeling memories, bodily sensations, muscle memories, and memorised autonomic responses. The sensory elements of the experience remain unprocessed, unintegrated, and unattached to a narrative.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a result, trauma survivors commonly don’t have “memories” of the traumatic experience to which to attribute their symptoms, and on top - and if they do have conscious awareness of what ‘happened’, eg. in the case of prolonged traumatic experiences in adulthood, they probably have a difficult time putting the experience into words. Yet the body continues to speak for them - via unconscious awareness of these implicit memories (and high sensitivity to them at that) and the wide-reaching implications of unresolved trauma via the nervous system and on the body - as seen in the image at the end.
