Expanding Language at the Playground

The playground is basically a free speech therapy session — if you know what to listen for!

Here's how to expand your child's language while they climb, slide, and swing:

- "Requests" — wait at the top of the slide and let them ask for "go!" or "push!"
- "Describing" — talk about what you see: "You're SO high!" or "That's fast!"
- "Fun!" — label the emotion so they can too
- "Colours" — point out what's around: "The blue slide!" "The red swing!"
- "Action words" — run, jump, climb, slide, swing, push, pull… playgrounds are FULL of verbs

The trick to expanding language? Take what your child says and add one word. If they say "slide," you say "big slide!" or "slide down!" That's how little sentences grow. 🌱

🌈 What's been happening at the I Spy Space!

This week we've been obsessed with our rainbow petal marble run! Drop the ball at the top and watch it cascade down the colourful leaves — the anticipation on their faces is everything.

Why we love it: It builds visual tracking, patience, and cause-and-effect understanding. Plus, the gentle clacking sound is oddly satisfying for kids AND grown-ups.

Bubbles are packed with opportunities for communication! 🫧

Through shared smiles, anticipation, gestures, turn-taking, and those excited requests for "more!", bubbles create the perfect environment for building early communication skills.

✨ Action words: blow, pop, clap, stomp, poke
✨ Describing words: big, small, shiny, sticky, pretty
✨ Anticipation: ready, set... go!, waiting, requesting more, shared attention

Best of all, children are learning without even realising it. Sometimes the most meaningful communication opportunities happen when we're simply having fun together 💛

When you're reading with your child, don't just read the words — bring the story to life!

- Point to pictures and ask "What's that?"
- Make animal sounds together
- Let them turn the pages
- Pause and predict what happens next

Interactive reading builds vocabulary, comprehension, and a love of books that lasts a lifetime. Plus, it's way more fun for both of you!

Shark Bite has been a crowd favourite in sessions lately!

This little game has popped up in almost every therapy session over the past fortnight and the kids are loving it.

Some of the ways we’ve been using it in speech sessions include:

⭐ Supporting fluency during Lidcombe Program practice sessions
⭐ Practising speech sounds (like /ch/ in catch)
⭐ Targeting action words – catching, fishing, eating, chomping, biting
⭐ Practising turn-taking in games
⭐ Building describing skills – colours, fish sizes, spiky fish and more

Play-based therapy allows us to practise important communication skills while children are engaged, motivated, and having fun 💬
