The internet is a wonderful place to start. It's a terrible place to finish.

Searching your symptoms online - or asking an AI - can feel reassuring in the moment. But it can also send you down a rabbit hole that leaves you more confused, more anxious, or worse, convinced of something that isn't true.

Your GP does something no algorithm can. They know you. Your history, your baseline, what's normal for you and what isn't. That context is everything when it comes to working out what's actually going on.

Get a second opinion that's actually a real one.

Your GP. A specialist. Here's how they work together.

You might be surprised how much your GP can manage without specialist input - from chronic conditions to mental health, skin concerns to women's health.

When something does need a closer look, your GP refers you to the right specialist or allied health professional. In Australia, you need that referral to access Medicare rebates for specialist care.

So whatever's going on - your first call is your GP.

When was the last time you saw the same GP twice?

For a lot of Australians, it's been a while. You see whoever is available, explain your history from scratch, and start again.

There's another way.

Having a regular GP - someone who knows your history, your family, what's normal for you - changes the quality of care you receive. Not because the other doctors aren't good. But because context matters.

At James St Medical, we encourage patients to build an ongoing relationship with a GP they trust. It's what we think good general practice looks like.

Could all those Slack notifications be making you sick? Hear us out.

Chronic stress doesn't just affect your mood. It affects your immune system, your sleep, your gut, your skin - and over time, it can show up in ways that genuinely surprise you.

If your body has been trying to tell you something, it might be worth listening.

Five minutes. Years of peace of mind.

Winter is a good reminder to check in on more than just your flu vaccine. If you're coming in for your flu shot, it's worth asking your GP to review your full vaccination history at the same time.

Whooping cough, diphtheria, RSV - there are a few worth being up to date on, especially if you're around young children or older family members.

Vaccine recommendations are always being updated so it pays to check.

Travelling abroad? Save this before you go.

โœˆ๏ธ Scripts - enough for your trip, plus extra. Some need a letter to clear customs.

๐Ÿ“‹ Travel insurance - your GP can provide supporting letters if you have an existing condition.

๐Ÿ’‰ Vaccines - Yes, even Europe. Previously rare diseases like measles are becoming more common as vaccination rates drop and travel increases. Bali, Asia, South America? Definitely worth a conversation.

๐Ÿงด Sunscreen - Brisbane skin in Bali is a genuine hazard.

๐Ÿฅ If you get sick abroad - your GP can brief you on what the solution looks like.

A pre-travel consult takes 20 minutes.

A cough that lingers after a cold is common - and usually nothing to worry about in the first week or two.

But if you're still coughing after three weeks, it's worth checking in with your GP.

A prolonged cough can have a number of causes - from post-viral inflammation to whooping cough, asthma, or reflux. Most are straightforward to manage once you know what you're dealing with.

In the meantime, if you can stay home from work and public places while you're coughing, it goes a long way to protecting the people around you.

Everything we thought we knew about babies and allergies has changed - and the results are remarkable.

For years, parents were told to keep eggs away from babies until they were older. New Australian research published in JAMA Pediatrics found the opposite is true - introducing eggs early reduced allergy rates by more than 17%.

Current ASCIA guidance recommends introducing well-cooked egg by around 6 months - once solids have started, but not before 4 months. ASCIA guidance also recommends offering egg at least once a week once introduced without reaction, to help maintain tolerance.

This is what evidence-based medicine looks like. Guidelines change because science improves.

If you have questions about introducing allergenic foods to your baby, your GP is the best place to start.
