🌿 Reframing the Conversation Around Palliative Care

For many people, hearing the words “palliative care” can feel frightening — almost like a loss of hope. But in reality, palliative care is about supporting quality of life, comfort, dignity and wellbeing.

At its heart, palliative care focuses on helping people live as fully and comfortably as possible, while also supporting families and loved ones along the way.

In many ways, we are all navigating life while balancing our health, wellbeing, choices and priorities. Conversations around palliative care remind us of the importance of living well, caring for ourselves and others, and understanding the supports available when they’re needed.

If specialist palliative support ever becomes part of someone’s journey, there are compassionate professionals, services and resources designed to help maximise comfort, connection and quality of life.

By learning more and having open conversations, we can begin removing some of the fear and misunderstanding that often surrounds palliative care — and focus more on living meaningfully.

💙 International Nurses Day

Today, we acknowledge and thank the nurses who care for people through some of life’s most vulnerable, challenging and meaningful moments.

From hospitals and aged care facilities to community care, palliative care and hospice settings, nurses provide not only medical support, but compassion, reassurance and human connection when it’s needed most.

Many families remember the kindness of a nurse long after a moment of crisis has passed — the gentle conversations, quiet support, comforting presence and care shown to both patients and loved ones alike.

To all nurses in our community, thank you for the important work you do each and every day.

💐 Mother’s Day 💛

Today can bring many emotions. For some, it’s a day of celebration and gratitude. For others, it may carry grief, longing, or quiet reflection for a mum, grandmother, child, or loved one no longer here.

However today looks for you, we hope you find a moment of gentleness, connection, and care. Whether through a phone call, shared meal, memory, photograph, or simply taking a quiet moment to reflect — love continues in many ways.

To all mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, carers, and those carrying the memory of someone special in their hearts today — we see you. 🌸

💐 Celebrating Mother’s Day with Our Community 💛

This week, our team had the pleasure of delivering Mother’s Day goodie bags filled with sweet treats, generously supported by Tom's Confectionery Warehouse.

We’re also sharing small pot plants as a gift to brighten the day and celebrate the wonderful mothers, residents, families, and staff within our community. 🌸

Mother’s Day can bring many emotions, but we hope these small gestures help bring a little warmth, kindness, and connection to those around us.

💬 Challenging Conversations Matter

The conversations we often avoid are usually the ones that matter most. Beneath the surface, they hold our deeper concerns, beliefs, and emotions — the parts of ourselves we instinctively protect.

When approached with sensitivity, compassion, and curiosity, these moments can create genuine connection and understanding. It’s often in vulnerability that we find the strongest human connections.

Avoidance, silence, and denial are natural responses when things feel overwhelming — but gently leaning in, at the right time, can make all the difference.

Let’s keep creating space for the conversations that truly matter. 💛

💬 Myth Buster: Anyone in the family can organise the funeral

Yes… and no.

Family members can absolutely share ideas and be involved. However, if an executor has been appointed in the will, they are the person with the legal authority to arrange and sign off on the funeral — including responsibility for the costs.

It’s also important to understand:
• An Advance Health Directive relates mainly to medical care
• An Enduring Power of Attorney ends upon death
• Funeral authority then rests with the executor

That’s why pre-planning your funeral wishes is so valuable.

💛 It can:
• Reduce family conflict
• Ensure cultural or personal wishes are respected
• Ease emotional pressure at a difficult time
• Provide clarity around costs

Having your wishes clearly recorded means your loved ones aren’t left guessing — they can simply honour what you wanted.

While not a grief support group, it is a safe and respectful place to discuss what may be on your mind.

💛 With Love, We Say… We Don’t Want to See You in Our Care

Today is World Day for Safety and Health at Work, a reminder that every worker deserves to return home safe — physically and mentally.

At Cornerstone, our role begins when life has ended, which is why we sincerely hope to see fewer people harmed through preventable workplace incidents and unsafe environments.

Workplace safety is more than physical risks. Psychosocial hazards can also cause real harm to mental and physical wellbeing. These may include:

• Excessive job demands
• Poor support or unclear roles
• Bullying, conflict or harassment
• Exposure to traumatic events
• Isolation or unsafe environments
• Lack of recognition or fairness

Just like physical hazards, these risks deserve to be identified, addressed, and managed.

Speak up. Name the hazard. Support one another. Create the kind of workplace where people can thrive.

Because meaningful change starts when someone is willing to start the conversation.
