Bowel Cancer Screening Saves Lives β€” But Too Many Australians Are Missing Out

The latest National Bowel Cancer Screening Program report reveals that while participation has increased slightly to 41.7%, nearly 6 in 10 eligible Australians still do not complete their free bowel cancer screening test.

Key findings:
βœ”οΈ 6.28 million Australians aged 50–74 were invited to participate.
βœ”οΈ Only 41.7% completed their screening test.
βœ”οΈ 86,089 participants (5.9%) had a positive result requiring further investigation.
βœ”οΈ Just 11.5% received a follow-up colonoscopy within the recommended 30 days.

Bowel cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages. A simple screening test can detect hidden blood in the stool and identify potential problems before they become serious.

If you're aged 50–74 and receive a bowel screening kit in the mail, don't put it aside. Completing the test could save your life.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers, but it is also one of the most preventable and treatable when detected early.

Knowing the warning signs can make a real difference. Symptoms may include:
βœ”οΈ Blood in the stool
βœ”οΈ Persistent changes in bowel habits
βœ”οΈ Unexplained weight loss
βœ”οΈ Ongoing abdominal pain or discomfort

Regular screening can detect bowel cancer before symptoms even appear, helping save lives through early intervention.

This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, take a moment to learn the signs, discuss screening with your doctor if appropriate, and encourage your loved ones to do the same.

πŸ’™ Early detection saves lives.

🦠 Antibiotics may affect your gut health for YEARS β€” not just days.

A new large study highlighted by the World Gastroenterology Organisation found that even a single course of certain antibiotics may alter the gut microbiome for up to 8 years. Some antibiotics were linked to reduced bacterial diversity and an increase in bacteria associated with obesity, diabetes, and inflammation. (WGO)

Antibiotics are often life-saving and absolutely necessary in many situations β€” but this research reminds us why they should be used carefully and only when truly needed.

Your gut microbiome plays an important role in:
βœ”οΈ Digestion
βœ”οΈ Immunity
βœ”οΈ Metabolism
βœ”οΈ Overall health

Simple ways to support gut health after antibiotics may include:
πŸ₯— A high-fibre diet
🍎 Diverse plant-based foods
πŸ₯› Fermented foods (when appropriate)
πŸ’§ Good hydration
πŸƒ Regular physical activity

Always speak with your doctor before starting probiotics or supplements.

At My Gut Care, we continue to follow emerging microbiome research closely as we learn more about the connection between gut bacteria and long-term health.
