Deb and Karen helping set the scene for the final session of Basecamp, our emotional regulation group for young people last night. A special mention to Chloe for the final touches on the Basecamp set up!

Our final session was designed to consolidate the skills we had worked on over the past five weeks, while giving the group a chance to finish with some games, fun activities and receive their certificates of completion.

A big well done to the young people who participated in Basecamp over the six weeks. Thank you also to Chloe, Kylie and Karen for the work that went into planning and running the group.

Next up, we are looking forward to our Social Confidence Group, commencing mid October for young people aged 8 - 14 years.

Today, we are thinking of all the fathers and father figures in our community, and the many different ways they care for, guide and support the people around them.

We also recognise that Father’s Day is not an easy day for everyone. It may bring love and celebration, but it can also bring grief, longing, complicated relationships or memories of someone deeply missed.

Whatever today looks like for you and your family, we hope there are moments of care, connection and kindness.

Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Sunrise Peak Psychology and Allied Health.

Our name has changed, but the heart of Sunrise Peak remains the same.

Sunrise Peak began with a belief that psychological support should feel human, individual and connected to the lives people actually live. We wanted to create a practice where children, adolescents and adults could feel understood, where therapy could extend beyond four walls when helpful and where each person would be supported as a whole human being rather than reduced to a diagnosis or difficulty.

As our practice has grown, so has our understanding of what meaningful support can look like. Emotional wellbeing, communication, physical health, nutrition, relationships, learning and everyday functioning do not exist separately from one another. For some people and families, having different professionals available within the same practice can make care feel more connected and easier to navigate.

Our new name, Sunrise Peak Psychology and Allied Health, reflects this broader horizon. Alongside Psychology, Adventure Therapy and Walk and Talk Therapy, we can now offer Speech Therapy, Exercise Physiology, Dietetics and psychological assessment services. Where appropriate, our practitioners can work collaboratively with families, schools, medical professionals and other members of a person’s support team.

What has not changed are the values at the centre of our work. We remain committed to thoughtful, evidence-based and individualised care. We will continue to value warmth, curiosity, collaboration and respect for the different experiences, strengths and needs each person brings.

Adventure Therapy and Walk and Talk Therapy remain important parts of who we are. We are not leaving our beginnings behind. We are building upon them so that we can support more people and offer broader, more coordinated care to those who may benefit from it.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Sunrise Peak as it has grown. We are very grateful to have you here with us.

Welcome to Sunrise Peak Psychology and Allied Health.

When Might Speech Therapy be Helpful?

You might notice that your child has lots they want to say, but other people have difficulty understanding them. Maybe they become frustrated when they cannot find the words they need, misunderstand instructions or find conversations with other children difficult to navigate.

Sometimes the concern is more subtle. You might simply have a feeling that speaking, understanding language, reading or communicating seems harder for your child than it does for other children their age.

Speech Therapy may be helpful if your child:

✨ Is difficult for family members, teachers or other children to understand;
✨ Has trouble producing particular speech sounds;
✨ Is late to begin talking or putting words together;
✨ Finds it difficult to understand questions, instructions or conversations;
✨ Has trouble finding the words to explain what they need, think or feel;
✨ Is finding reading, spelling or literacy challenging;
✨ Stutters or becomes stuck when trying to speak;
✨ Finds conversations or social communication difficult to navigate;

Every child develops differently, and noticing one of these things does not necessarily mean that something is wrong. An assessment can help you better understand your child’s communication strengths, clarify whether support may be helpful and provide practical recommendations for your family.

Sunrise Peak offers paediatric Speech Therapy via Telehealth, so your child can attend from the familiarity of home.

If some of this sounds familiar, you are welcome to contact us to discuss whether an appointment may be appropriate for your child.

What is EMDR, and what does it actually involve?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a structured psychological therapy that may help people process distressing or traumatic experiences.

For some people, difficult memories can continue to feel vivid, emotionally intense or very present, even when the experience happened a long time ago. EMDR aims to support the brain to process these memories so they become less distressing, while still remaining part of the person’s history.

There is strong research support for EMDR as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, and it is recommended in Australian and international clinical guidelines. Evidence for its use with some other difficulties is still developing.

EMDR is not automatically the right approach for everyone. A psychologist will take time to understand what has been happening for you, explain the process and consider whether EMDR may be suitable.

Tomorrow, our team spotlight is on Debbie Green, one of our psychologists who offers EMDR at Sunrise Peak Psychology and Allied Health.

When could it be helpful to speak with a psychologist?

People see psychologists for many different reasons. Sometimes something difficult has happened. Sometimes life has gradually become harder to manage. Sometimes you just know that things do not feel quite right, even if you cannot explain exactly why.

You do not need to wait until things become overwhelming before reaching out.

It may be helpful to speak with a psychologist if you or your child are experiencing:

✨ Persistent anxiety or worry;
✨ Low mood or emotional overwhelm;
✨ Stress, burnout or a significant life change;
✨ Grief, trauma or other difficult experiences;
✨ Relationship or family challenges;
✨ School-related distress, school refusal or school “can’t”;
✨ Difficulties understanding or regulating emotions;
✨ Patterns affecting everyday life, relationships or wellbeing;
✨ Concerns relating to eating, body image or self-esteem; and
✨ Sport or performance-related difficulties.

These are only some of the reasons people seek support. Psychological therapy is not one-size-fits-all. It should be shaped around each person’s experiences, needs and goals.

Sunrise Peak provides psychological services for children, adolescents and adults at our Ashgrove clinic. We also offer telehealth and outdoor therapy options.
