This is Valerie. My grandmother.

She's the reason I left professional sport at 22 to work in cancer care. She's the reason Valere Health exists.

And she's the reason I will never stop fighting for exercise to be a standard of care before, during and after cancer treatment. 🧡

Did you know that what you do before surgery can be just as important as what you do after?

Prehabilitation (prehab) is the process of preparing your body for the physical demands of surgery before it happens. And the research is clear: improving your cardiovascular fitness and strength in the lead-up to surgery leads to significantly better outcomes, reduced time spent in hospital, reduced strength deficits post-surgery, faster recovery, and improved quality of life on the other side.

Because the better prepared you are going in, the better your body is equipped to heal.

At Valere Health, our individualised prehab programs are designed around you - your surgery, your starting point, and your goals.

Don't wait until after surgery to start moving. The time is now.

Try this at home to build strength and stability through your shoulders, core, and glutes.
If you’re someone struggling with back pain, hip or knee pain, or general pain and weakness through your shoulders then try these side plank variations are some of my favourites to use throughout sessions as the build stability throughout the whole body.

In all variations make sure you stay lifted through your armpit and hips and keep that shoulder under elbow. If you are recovering from breast cancer surgery please wait atleast 9 weeks before trying level 1 and atleast 12-15 weeks for level 3

đź”´ Level 1 - side plank hold
đźź Level 2 - add in a thread the needle try 8es and make sure the rotation comes from your rib cage
🟢 Level 3 - add in a side raise, Morgan’s favourite end stage rehab exercise for those rebuilding strength and stability post breast cancer surgery

There are no words more powerful than hearing it directly from the people we have the privilege of working with.

This is why we do what we do. If you or someone you know is navigating cancer treatment, you don't have to do it alone.

Most people know exercise is "good for you."
Not many people know it can help their chemotherapy work better.
When you exercise, blood flow increases, including to the tumour site. That means treatment gets delivered more efficiently, right where it's needed. Your muscles also release immune cells directly into circulation when they contract. Cells capable of reaching the tumour and helping treatments work better
This is what exercise oncology is. It's not about fitness. It's not about pushing through. It's about using movement as a clinical tool — one that's backed by research and designed around where you're at right now, on the day.

Struggling with back, hip, knee pain or you’re wanting to strengthen your hips? These are Amy’s four favourite glute exercises you can either try at home or when you’re next in the gym.

Strong glutes aren’t just about aesthetics. They play a key role in hip stability, lower back support, and supporting healthy movement patterns through the hips and knees, whether you’re recovering from injury or simply want to move better day to day.

Have you spotted one of these in your program before? 👀 If Amy’s ever cued you through these, you’ll know exactly why she loves them.

Give these a go and let us know how you get on! Save this for your next gym session 💪🏻

We’ve been keeping a secret.
A new look for Valere. It was time our brand matched the services and programs we deliver.
Valere means “to be strong” or “to be well” in Latin. That’s at the heart of everything we do.
Valere began when Morgan’s grandmother Valerie was diagnosed with lymphoma, she supported her through treatment when most people told her to rest. The results were remarkable enough that her own oncologist started referring other patients to us. That’s when Valere began.
We are the same evidence-based care, same team, same mission, some evidence based person informed care with a New look, new colours, new chapter.
Welcome to the new Valere Health.

P.S this isn’t the only secret we’ve been keeping

It’s Men’s Health Week, and we’re sharing how three men have used exercise throughout their cancer diagnosis to maintain their health.

💪🏼Jason was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. His sessions have focused on strength training and impact loading for bone health. Despite his diagnosis, he’s achieved no evidence of disease and is currently ceasing all treatment.

💪🏼John came to us having lost 15kg as a result of his diagnosis and chemotherapy. We’ve been working on building muscle strength and immune function leading into his transplant.

💪🏼Malcolm came to us with a diagnosis of prostate cancer. We’ve been working on his muscle and bone strength to help him tolerate treatment and get the most out of life.
