A familiar face at The Eye Health Centre 👋

Meet Dr Andrew Apel, ophthalmologist and founding director of The Eye Health Centre.

With more than 25 years’ experience, Dr Apel has additional subspecialty training in corneal and anterior segment surgery, including a Corneal and External Diseases Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada.

His clinical interests include corneal disease, corneal transplantation and complex anterior segment care.

Some eye conditions can develop quietly, with few or no noticeable symptoms in their early stages.

Glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy can gradually damage the eye, while retinal tears or detachment may cause sudden changes that require urgent attention.

The Eye Health Centre was proud to be part of the Optometry Australia Optometry Clinical Conference, both as a conference sponsor and through a presentation by Dr Andrew Apel and Dr John Hogden on pterygium surgery, corneal health and corneal grafts.

Their session highlighted the importance of thoroughly assessing the cornea before cataract surgery. A pterygium can alter corneal topography and affect the accuracy of preoperative measurements, potentially influencing the final surgical outcome. Other conditions, including corneal scarring and Fuchs’ Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy, may also need to be addressed before or alongside cataract surgery to achieve the best possible result.

The conference was a valuable opportunity for optometrists and ophthalmologists to share knowledge and strengthen collaborative care. By working together to identify, refer and manage corneal conditions early, we can make informed treatment decisions and provide patients with coordinated care throughout their eye health journey.

Astigmatism is a common focusing condition caused by the shape of the cornea or lens. It can make vision appear blurred, stretched or unclear at any distance, and may also contribute to eye strain or headaches.

At The Eye Health Centre, our ophthalmologists assess the cause and degree of your astigmatism, explain your options clearly, and recommend care tailored to your vision, lifestyle and eye health. For some patients, this may include surgical correction.

Suitability for treatment varies. Individual assessment is required.
