Meet Jupiter 🏀

This beautiful smile belongs to Jupiter — he's a confident teenager who enjoys basketball.

But 12 years ago, he was a shy four-year-old living with an untreated cleft condition. Other children teased him, and he often kept to himself.

His parents loved him deeply, but they had no way to afford the surgery he needed. They made a modest living from fishing, and after Typhoon Yolanda destroyed their home, they faced challenges far beyond their control.

Then an Operation Smile surgical programme in Cebu City gave them hope.
That surgery changed everything.

When Jupiter's mother saw him afterwards, she cried with joy. "He is so beautiful!" she said.

Nine-year-old Anitha travelled five hours by bus with her family to reach surgery in Vijayawada, India.

She’d already undergone cleft lip repair as a baby. This time, she needed a complex cleft palate procedure — and she faced it with extraordinary courage.

Behind her care was a dedicated team of volunteer medical professionals, including Australian anaesthetist Dr Stacey Swinkels.

"These are normal children with hopes and dreams. Craniofacial differences should never stand in the way of reaching their life goals," she says.

At this Vijayawada, India Program (22 Nov – 1 Dec 2025):

• 76 cleft surgeries completed over 10 days
• 137 patients screened
• 36 volunteers delivering care and mentorship alongside local teams

One intensive day to ensure decisive, coordinated care is second nature💙

At our recent Global Impact Forum, 18 of our highly capable medical volunteers got stuck into a one-day Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) refresher — ensuring they’re across the latest guidelines and best practice.

The training covered current resuscitation care, airway and ventilation strategies, medication procedural recommendations, and closed loop communication—so care is coordinated and decisive when every second matters.

All of our Operation Smile Australia volunteers are required to hold a current PALS certification. It's part of our ongoing commitment to safe, high-quality care for every surgery we do.

For the next ten days, Dr Victor Chen, an anaesthetist from Australia, will be volunteering at the Operation Smile Philippines - Cebu Center of Excellence .

During his time in Cebu, Dr Chen will be providing essential anaesthesia care for children undergoing life‑changing cleft surgery.

He will also be working closely with local medical teams, sharing expertise to support ongoing training to help strengthen safe‑surgery capacity in the region.

Volunteers like Dr Chen play a crucial role not only in delivering high‑quality care, but also in building sustainable skills and systems that create lasting impact for children and families across the Philippines.

Ramata, a child from rural Ghana, faced significant barriers to care in early childhood.

Born with a cleft condition, her mother, Mariana, made six unsuccessful journeys in search of surgery — each time raising money for bus fares, travelling long distances and returning home without the treatment her daughter needed.

With Operation Smile’s support, Ramata finally received a series of cleft lip and palate surgeries. At a later follow-up, we learned that she was thriving at school, engaged in learning and participating with confidence.

At our recent surgical program in Mtwara, Tanzania the impact looked like this:

80 patients screened. 44 surgeries completed. 1 anaesthetist mentored to independence.

And one unforgettable moment — a teenager who danced into the operating room for his life-changing cleft repair. 💙

But the story doesn’t end there. Early data suggests that when local teams are trained and supported, the impact multiplies across skill sets and far beyond a single program.

"Learning is multi-directional," reflected Australian anaesthetist, Dr Stacey Swinkles — who mentored a skilled local colleague in paediatric anaesthesia, covering weight-based drug calculations, equipment sizing, and emergency management.

"By the end of the week, he was running safety checklists confidently and translating the process to a coworker in Swahili. To me this represented the whole reason why we are there — to propagate safe practices and influence daily work behaviours across a work culture."

In conjunction with National Volunteer Week, Operation Smile Australia has welcomed volunteers from across Australia and New Zealand to our Global Impact Forum at Australia's R&D Labs at Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital.

Held over two days, the forum explores OSA global perspectives, leadership development and strategic direction. Featured speakers include:

• The President of the Philippine Medical Association
• Representatives from Operation Smile India, Operation Smile Philippines, and Operation Smile Vietnam

Throughout the forum, volunteers will hear from our international partners, complete essential PALS training, and explore pathways to grow from clinician to educator, mentor and faculty leader.
