Dr Brad Robinson Dr Brad Robinson
MBBS, FRANCOG
Masters of Reproductive Medicine (UNSW)
Grad Dip Comms, BBus These credentials are further supported with research achievements.

I graduated from medical school at the University of Queensland in 2004, and, after completing my residency, commenced specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology. Placements at the Townsville Hospital, the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and Caboolture Hospital, gave me invaluable experience caring for women through their pregnancies, labours, and deliveries, including in high-risk and

complicated pregnancies. I then undertook two years of specialised gynaecology training in Adelaide. During my first year I worked principally in the area of urogynaecology, developing my skills in the conservative and surgical management of vaginal prolapse and urinary incontinence. My second year in South Australia saw me complete 12 months training in advanced laparoscopic surgery, enhancing my skills in keyhole surgery. During this time I also completed a Masters of Reproductive Medicine through the University of NSW, giving me specialised knowledge in managing couples with infertility and other gynaecological concerns. In 2009 I was awarded the prestigious Crown Street Medal for best original research by a Registrar or Fellow for my study into detection of threatened pre-term labour. As well as my enduring love of obstetrics, I have special interests in the management of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, the menopause, and fertility. I have also written about pregnancy and fertility issues for popular women’s website, Mamamia. My private practice is “Greenslopes Obstetrics & Gynaecology” located at the Greenslopes Private Hospital, where my patients have access to facilities of the finest quality in Brisbane. I am proud to offer patient-focused care in a relaxed, open and friendly manner. I live with my wife Rebecca, my three young children, and our much-loved dog, Reuben. When I’m not working I spend time with my family, trying to stay fit, watching all manner of sport, and struggling to beat my kids at Pac-Man.

You know what the most common question that I get asked by new Mum’s after birth is?

HINT: It’s not ‘why doesn’t this thing come with instructions?!’

It’s about the sudden increase in fluid women commonly notice after birth, particularly in their feet and lower legs.

The common assumption is that this fluid must be sinister, and possibly reflect a disease process like pre-eclampsia - but it is typically just a normal physiological response to the changes in the uterus after birth.

About 500 mos of blood is pretty rapidly expelled from the uterine muscle after birth when it contracts, with the blood being dumped into the circulatory system.

The body then realises it needs to adjust this, and it dumps fluid out of the blood which then accumulates initially in the peripheral tissue until the body is able to clear it over the subsequent weeks.

So certainly ask if you’re concerned - but it is usually all good!

Vaccination in pregnancy is important to help protect the newborn against potentially dangerous diseases including Whooping cough and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

When the Mum is given the vaccine she develops antibodies against the pathogen and then passes these via her blood supply to the baby. This then offers the baby some ‘passive’ protection once it is born.

There’s nothing quite as thrilling as how fate - and a mucus-obsessed Obstetrician’s portable speaker - can throw up the perfect song at the moment of birth 🎵👶

Jillian and Jim and baby Clay somehow found that fateful intersection and Clay was ushered into this world with a literally perfect song for the circumstances

Now, somehow, we just need to add a dog into these scenarios so I can find the union of three of my great loves 😆

I’ll be you’ve been told MANY times in your life that being cold will cause you to come down with a cold or flu.

This is probably the greatest persisting myth in all of medicine!

Comes and flus are respiratory tract infections caused by viral infections. So being cold doesn’t magically cause a virus to appear in your body!

This morning I have done one of the early sessions in a 26 + week training program for my back rehabilitation at Coorparoo.

The surgery I had 8 weeks ago fixed the structural problem I had but that isn’t the end of the treatment. Not even close!

I now need to fix the muscular performance and integrity of my back and core, and hips and gluteals, and pretty much everything - to ensure that I actually return to normal pain free function.

I realised this morning the parallels that there are with this program for me, and in the treatment of women with endometriosis.

The old days of ‘have surgery that’ll fix you’ are (or at least should be) long behind us. Post excision of peritoneal disease it is crucial that women undertake a detailed rehabilitation program with a women’s health physiotherapist.

It is not a stretch to say that the physiotherapy is possibly at LEAST as important as the surgery - and in some cases more so!

I may be smiling here but in truth I’m just a *leetle* bit heartbroken 💔

Many of you who have had their babies at would know the smiling face with me and would have seen her brilliance first hand

This is the irreplaceable Dr Rebecca Hopkins. Bec has assisted with our Caesarean sections for so many years now. But she is now leaving for different opportunities (that I hope she hates!! 🤣)

Bec is not only an amazing surgical assistant and doctor, she is the most delightful human who will be so badly missed 😢

I’m not saying Goidbye Bec, just a hopeful ‘see you later!?’ I really don’t want to see you do a Chemical Brothers and ‘Go’ 😬

THIRD PARTY CONFIRMATION OF THE ‘SCALES FOR HANDS’ !! 👏⚖️

Don’t just take my word for it - listen to Britney and Jack! Beautiful little Emelia here will grow up knowing that she was weighed by greatness 🤪

Dr Brad’s ‘Scales for Hands’ weight = 3.13 kgs
*Actual* scales weight = 3.16 kgs
DIFFERENCE = 30 grams

That means I was out by only 0.94 percent!!!

Thanks to these two delightful humans for entertaining my tomfoolery ❤️❤️

Pregnancy after previous pregnancy loss is so incredibly hard and there are so many emotional triggers and grief traps littered throughout it.

One thing that no one seems to talk about is the new sense of grief and loss you feel for your lost pregnancy when you have a subsequent baby.

I remember this feeling so acutely. It hit me like an absolute sledge hammer. Here I was holding my new son Finn feeling no real joy. Just anguish and pain for my daughter Georgie.

Because being in that position with your new baby shows you everything you lost, everything you missed, everything that was taken from you 💔

If you are experiencing this please don’t feel guilty (as I did). Don’t let it add to your guilt and grief. Understand to your grief will come to you in different ways and at unexpected times. And grieving a lost child doesn’t mean you love your new baby any less. Even if it feels different to how it may have initially ❤️
