YOU CAN EXPECT TO...

You left the session feeling worse than when you walked in, and you weren't sure if that was normal...

You also weren't sure you were allowed to say so.

That moment, sitting in your car afterwards with your chest tight and your thoughts racing, is one of the ways healing gets stuck. Not because therapy failed you, but because no one told you what you were allowed to expect from the person sitting across from you.

So here it is, in plain words:

You are allowed to expect to feel emotionally safe before anyone asks you to go deeper.

You are allowed to ask what we are doing and why, in language that actually makes sense.

You are allowed to set the pace, and to say "that's enough for today" without apologising for it.

You are allowed to ask what happens if you leave a session feeling worse, and to know there's a plan for that, not just a "see you next week".

If faith is part of how you make sense of your life, you are allowed to bring that into the room. Not to have it set aside or gently worked around, but taken seriously as part of who you are.

And you are allowed to ask, honestly, whether this approach is actually working for you. That question isn't rude. It's part of the work.

Trauma teaches so many people to suppress their own needs to keep the room calm. If that's been you, hear me: your needs are not an inconvenience to your healing. They are the compass for it.

When you're ready, I'm here for you.

EMOTIONAL CONNECTION

There is something quietly powerful about sitting in a room full of therapists and hearing, again and again, how much we all long to be truly seen.

Last week I completed training in EFT, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples. It is an approach that helps partners move past the surface arguments and reach the softer place underneath, where the real longing lives. The longing to matter to someone. The longing to be heard. The longing to know that when we reach, someone reaches back.

What struck me most was how universal this is.

Every couple, no matter how different their stories, seemed to be asking the same questions of each other.
Are you there for me?
Do I matter to you?
Can I count on you when it hurts?

And sitting with that, something deeper settled in me. ๐ŸŒฟ

We are wired for connection. It is a real need, woven into our nervous systems, our hearts, our whole being. We were created for relationship. For me, as a person of faith, this points to something even greater: our longing for connection with each other reflects our longing for connection with God. We were made for both.

Whether or not faith is part of your story, the truth of your need for connection remains.
It is how you were designed.

If you and your partner have been feeling the distance grow, or if the same painful cycles keep pulling you apart, please know there is a way back to each other. Learning how to reach, and how to receive, can change everything.

With warmth,
Debbie

There is a word for what happens when a memory stops controlling your present.

Memory reconsolidation.

It sounds clinical, but stay with me, because this is the quiet science behind why TRTP works differently to talk therapy.

Your brain stores traumatic memories with an emotional charge attached. That charge is what makes your chest tighten when you hear a certain tone of voice. What makes your body flinch at a smell, a date on the calendar, a room that looks a little too much like that room.

The memory itself isn't the problem. The emotional charge connected to it is.

Memory reconsolidation is your brain's own natural process of taking a stored memory off the shelf, updating it, and putting it back without that same emotional firing. The event stays. The story stays. But the alarm bell stops ringing every time your nervous system brushes past it.

TRTP (The Richards Trauma Process) is built around creating the exact conditions your brain needs for that update to happen. Safely. In a structured way. Without asking you to re-live the details over and over hoping something will shift.

This is why so many of my clients describe the same thing afterward. The memory is still there when they look for it, but it feels further away. Quieter. Like a photograph instead of a live wire.

You are not broken for still reacting to something that ended years ago. Your brain has simply been holding a memory with the charge still switched on, and no one has shown it how to switch it off.

If you have been carrying something too heavy for too long, you don't have to keep white-knuckling your way through it. There is a process for this, and there is language for why it works.

When you are ready, I'm here for you.

HOW DOES THAT FIRST SESSION LOOK LIKE ???

I always say that the first session is to get to know each other.
To check me out. To figure out if I might be a person who you feel comfortable with, a person you could trust and feel comfortable with.

You don't have to tell me everything in day one.
Not the full story. Not the details you've never said out loud. Not the parts you're still trying to make sense of yourself.

A good therapist will never rush your disclosure. Because emotional safety has to come first, otherwise your nervous system stays braced and the work simply can't land.

I GOT YOU.
I SEE YOU.
I AM IN THIS WITH YOU.

Here's what that actually looks like in my room:

You get to choose what you share, and when. You get to say "I'm not ready to go there yet" without needing to explain why. You get to slow down mid-sentence. You get to sit in silence. You get to ask any questions that are on your heart.

TRTP (The Richards Trauma Process, the modality we use) is structured this way on purpose. Your body doesn't need to relive every detail to heal. It needs to feel safe enough to finally let go.

If you've ever left a therapy session feeling more exposed than held, that wasn't your failure. It was a pace that didn't honour what you'd been through.

When you're ready, we'll go at the speed your system can trust. Not a moment before.

You did the breathing work. The journalling. The podcasts. The caffeine cut-off at midday.

And still, you struggle to stop overthinking, you can't get to sleep. You chest still feels tight when waking up...

That's not you failing at healing. That's a nervous system that learned to stay on guard - in survival mode, and hasn't been shown yet that the moment of pain has passed.

Anxiety isn't only a thinking problem. It's a pattern your body is holding, often long after your mind has moved on. Which is why insight alone rarely settles it.

If you've been doing all the right things and still feel wired, exhausted, and braced for something bad, you're not broken. Your body learned to protect you. Healing is about helping it learn something new.

I wish more people knew that there is a transformational therapy (TRTP) before they started trying to "fix" their anxiety on the surface.

At inside out counselling we are not just "managing" your symptoms. My aim is to reset your nervous system to:
"I'm safe. It's over."

When you're ready, I'm here for you.

She almost didn't book.

Not because she wasn't ready, but because she wasn't sure her faith would be welcome in the therapy room. She'd been praying about her healing for years. She didn't want to sit across from someone who'd ask her to leave that part of herself at the door.

Three months in, she told me something I've carried with me since.

"This is the first time I've felt whole in both."

Faith and trauma therapy are not in competition. They can sit in the same room, in the same breath, in the same healing.

So if it helps to hear it plainly, here is your permission:

โœ“ You are allowed to pray before a session
โœ“ You are allowed to ask your therapist to honour your faith
โœ“ You are allowed to bring Scripture into your healing
โœ“ You are allowed to believe God and therapy can work together

Nothing about the work we do here asks you to set your beliefs aside. TRTP (The Richards Trauma Process) is a gentle, structured way of helping the body release what trauma left behind. Your faith can walk with you the whole way through.

When you're ready, she's here for you ๐Ÿค

Healing rarely announces itself.

There's no fanfare the first time you sleep through the night.
No headline the morning you laugh without forcing it.
No one claps when a stressful moment passes through you instead of hijacking your whole day.
No one notices that you did not experience another anxiety attack, but were able to breath through the moment...

So many of the people I sit with expect healing to feel like a big, cinematic breakthrough. It usually doesn't. It looks like resting on the couch without guilt. Like your shoulders dropping while you wait for the kettle. Like noticing, halfway through a walk, that the low hum of dread you'd learned to live with is quieter today.

Please know, small shifts are not small. They're often the first proof that real healing is underway.

You don't have to carry this alone ๐ŸŒฟ I got you.

You want a therapist who won't ask you to leave your faith at the door. You also want real, evidence-based help.

Those two things aren't in conflict.

One of the questions I hear most often is this: "Do I have to choose between my faith and proper therapy?" The short answer is no. But it helps to understand what actually differs, so you can choose what feels safe and whole for you.

Faith-based therapy weaves Scripture, prayer, and your spiritual identity into the healing process. For clients whose faith is central to how they make meaning, find hope, and understand who they are, this integration matters. God is not left in the waiting room. The therapeutic work and the work of the Holy Spirit sit alongside each other.

Secular therapy uses the same psychological frameworks and evidence-based approaches, without a spiritual lens. For clients who prefer to keep faith and therapy in separate spaces, this is a good fit. The work is no less deep, no less real.

Neither is more legitimate than the other. Both can bring genuine healing. The right fit depends on what makes your nervous system settle, what helps you feel understood, and what honours the whole of who you are.

At Inside Out Counselling, I hold space for both. If your faith is part of your story, it's welcome in my room. If it isn't, the work is just as safe.

When you're ready, I'm here for you.

She didn't notice it at first.

Then one morning she realised she'd driven the whole way to work without gripping the steering wheel. Her hands were resting. Her jaw was soft. The radio was on and she was humming.

That was the moment she knew something had changed.

Healing rarely announces itself. It doesn't arrive with fireworks or a finish line. It slips in quietly, in the ordinary moments you almost miss.

Sleeping through the night, and only realising it when you wake up.

Shoulders that used to live near your ears, dropping without you asking them to.

A spiral of thought that used to swallow whole days, ending after twenty minutes instead.

Laughing at something small on a Tuesday, and meaning it.

If you're in the middle of your own healing work, please hear this. You are allowed to count those moments. You are allowed to trust them. You are allowed to call it healing, even when it looks like nothing more than a quiet, ordinary day.

The small shifts are real. They are the healing. ๐ŸŒฟ

When you're ready to begin, or to keep going, she's here for you.

You've talked about it for months. Maybe years.

You've read the books. Filled the journals. Sat across from thoughtful people who helped you understand exactly why you feel the way you do.

And still, the moment something triggers it, the panic rises like it always has. Chest tight. Breath shallow. That familiar drop in your stomach that no amount of insight seems to touch.

That's not a failure of effort. It's a difference in method.

Talk therapy is a beautiful thing. It helps you make sense of your story, navigate current stress, work through relationship challenges, and build self-awareness over time. For so many people, it's exactly what they need.

That's where TRTP (The Richards Trauma Process) is different. Across three structured sessions, it works with where trauma is actually stored, gently removing the emotional charge, so the memory can stay without the alarm bells attached to it.

If you've done the work and still feel stuck, please hear this: you are not broken, and you haven't failed. You may simply need an approach that meets the trauma where it actually lives. ๐ŸŒฟ

When you're ready, I'm here for you.
