In a first for the Australia-Pacific region, Dr Gunn performed LASIK surgery while looking at a high-definition 3D display, wearing polarized 3D glasses to perceive depth. While the system allows for a more comfortable operating position for the doctor, it’s also designed to minimise light exposure to the patient’s eye.
A bonus is the extra scope for teaching. Because everyone in the operating theatre sees the same large 3D image on screen, not just the surgeon who looks through a traditional eyepiece, everyone in the room can follow the procedure in real time.
“The stereoscopic detail is remarkable, the ergonomics are far better, and everyone in theatre sees exactly what the surgeon sees,” Dr Gunn said. “It was the first time our theatre staff had watched LASIK in stereoscopic 3D.”

The QEI research team welcomed two post-graduate students from Aix Marseille Université, Polytech Marseille this winter. Aya Kneni and Marwa Marchane worked on crosslinking tarsal collagen by exposing it to different coloured light and photosensitisers, making valuable contributions to QEI’s research on novel treatments for eyelid laxity disorders. Dr Shuko Suzuki supervised the students during their time at QEI, with Chief Scientist Professor Traian Chirila providing project coordination.

Prof Mark Radford met with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão recently to discuss Australian support for their vitreo-retinal services. He formed part of a delegation overseeing donation of vitrectomy machines and consumable items to the eye clinic at Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV) in Dili.

Professor Mark Radford flew the flag for eye research at the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) annual convention and dinner held in Canberra recently. This year’s program addressed the sustainability of the medical research sector, with insights from leading Australian and international experts. Topics included the sector’s strategic direction, research translation and commercialisation, sector benchmarking, technological innovation and initiatives to support the research institute workforce.

“Let’s do education but make it fun.” This was the brief from Tina Huynh and QEI ophthalmologists rose to the challenge with their usual dramatic flair.
On a cool winter night in August, 50 optometrists gathered on the rooftop at QEI to network and dine, before heading to the clinic for Eye Solved It (see what we did there 😊).
This ‘Who dunnit’ event focused on medical retina, corneal and orbital disease, glaucoma and post-cataract surgery complications. Participants studied real cases under the guidance of QEI Ophthalmologists and worked together in small groups to uncover the mystery behind each condition.

More good news for our near neighbours. East Timor ophthalmologists can expect a shipment of essential disposables to support eye surgery in areas of need later this month. Alcon donated the items to the Queensland Eye Institute to support its global eye health initiatives. And thanks to Rotary Australia’s RARE program, the donated goods will be shipped to East Timor at no cost to QEI. The boxes pictured here have been packed into a container with other donated goods, including desks and books from Brisbane schools, with shipping costs met by a generous corporate donor. QEI is grateful to Rotary Australia Repurposing Equipment (RARE), Northern Region for this valuable and practical support for its global eye health program.

QEI recently hosted a wet lab teaching and lecture series on small manual incision cataract surgery, in partnership with the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists. Clinicians from around Australia attended the full day workshop and seminar at QEI’s Woolloongabba campus, run in conjunction with the ASO Annual Conference. QEI's Professor Mark Radford delivered opening remarks and Dr Alexandra Manta and Tina Huynh provided clinical and logistical support.

Small manual incision cataract surgery skills are particularly important in low resource settings, including some of Australia’s pacific neighbours.

Double the impact of your gift to vision research. For every dollar donated to the Queensland Eye Institute Foundation by 30 June, the South Brisbane Day Hospital will match it, dollar for dollar. A gift of $50 becomes $100. A gift of $500 becomes $1,000. This is a rare opportunity to multiply your generosity and accelerate the pace of discovery.

When you support the Queensland Eye Institute Foundation, you join a community of donors who believe sight is precious, and that protecting it is a meaningful legacy to leave. Decades from now, the research you help fund could be the standard of care, benefiting generations who will see the world more clearly because of you.

📚Available now

The QEI 2025 Year in Review is available on the website now.

There was much to celebrate in 2025, particularly the 60th anniversary of the Queensland Eye Institute Foundation and 20 years offering advanced clinical care through the Queensland Eye Institute clinic. The volume and breadth of QEI’s contributions to scientific meetings, by both its scientific and clinical teams, is testament to the model of vision research adopted by the Foundation in 2005.

Read or download a copy from the QEI website to learn about the QEI research program, clinical trials and education opportunities offered last year.
