Rumination can be difficult to recognise because it often feels productive or like you’re working towards something.

It can look like replaying conversations, trying to find certainty, mentally reviewing situations or convincing yourself that you’ve finally figured it out.

The intention is usually to reduce anxiety, gain clarity or feel more certain. But OCD creates a problem. The relief from ruminating is often short-lived and the urge to think about it returns.

This month, we’re exploring the compulsions people don’t always realise they’re doing as not all compulsions are visible.

Rumination can be difficult to recognise because it often feels productive and like your working towards something like an answer or certainty or temporary relief.

It can look like replaying conversations, trying to find certainty, mentally reviewing situations, or convincing yourself that you’ve finally figured it out.

The intention is usually to reduce anxiety, gain clarity or feel more certain. But with OCD, there’s a problem. The relief is short-lived and the urge to think and ruminate returns.

This month, we’re exploring the compulsions people don’t always realise they’re doing as not all compulsions are visible.

Responsibility OCD can leave people feeling like they need to prevent harm at all costs.

This might involve repeatedly checking, seeking reassurance or going over situations to make sure nothing has been missed.

While these behaviours can provide temporary relief, they often strengthen the cycle over time.

This is one of the many ways OCD can show up.

When people think of compulsions, they often think of behaviours they can see. You might think of things like checking, washing, cleaning or repeating tasks. But many compulsions happen entirely in the mind.

This could include replaying conversations, reviewing memories, checking how you feel, trying to reassure yourself or searching for certainty.

Because these compulsions aren’t visible, people often don’t recognise them as compulsions at all.

This month, we’re exploring the compulsions you don’t realise you’re doing and why mental compulsions can keep OCD going just as much as physical ones.

Helpful tools for those days that feel heavier than others…🦋

When emotions are running high, we don’t encourage you to “fix” how you feel or force yourself to be positive. Instead, we encourage you to respond with care, compassion and a little less pressure on yourself.

Hint: it’s often the things that matter most to you.

OCD doesn’t randomly choose topics. It often latches onto the things that feel important, meaningful, or worth protecting. That’s why OCD can feel so confusing. The thoughts can seem significant because they target what you care about most.

The themes may be different, but the cycle remains the same.
