Sharing a personal recovery story takes courage. One Lives Lived Well Katoomba client recently shared their experience of reaching out for support after a difficult period in their life.

“I have a pattern of alcohol abuse directly correlated with my mental health.”

After a mental breakdown, things escalated quickly with ongoing mental health challenges and alcohol use. Even with the intention to stop, it wasn’t easy.

“After my first mental health clinic admission, I went right back to regular heavy drinking as a coping mechanism.”

With the right support, things began to shift.
“After voicing my concerns with my Psychologist, she recommended reaching out to Lives Lived Well… one of their peer support workers called within a couple of hours.”

From there, connection and consistency made a difference.
“I was quickly attending their Katoomba location's weekly group SMART recovery program plus regular one on one counselling. I still attend both to this day…”

“Lives Lived Well Katoomba has been instrumental in not only continued sobriety for over 9 months but my mental health on going recovery as a whole. The staff have been nothing short of amazing… I cannot recommend Lives Lived Well Katoomba enough.”

We're still buzzing from AddictionZ 2026 on the Gold Coast!

Our team joined hundreds of professionals, researchers and lived experience advocates to explore the themes shaping the future of addiction and mental health care. From the power of human connection and compassion to digital innovation, culturally responsive practice and the growing recognition of lived experience leadership.

We got the chance to present, collaborate and contribute to conversations that matter. As one team member summed it up perfectly: "Connection was the clear takeaway — a reminder of how profoundly it impacts the people we support."

A huge thank you to Australian & New Zealand Mental Health Association for putting together such a thought-provoking and inspiring conference, we're already looking forward to the next one 😊

As National Reconciliation Week came to a close, we marked Mabo Day by reflecting on the legacy of Eddie Mabo and the ongoing journey towards reconciliation.

Earlier this week, our Head Office team had the opportunity to take part in a cultural art workshop led by Anthony Kemp and Kaylene Bowden from Aboriginal Cultural Immersions.

Through storytelling, conversation and creativity, staff learned about traditional Aboriginal symbols and patterns before creating their own canvas and boomerang artworks. Each piece told a unique story, reflecting personal journeys, connections, values and aspirations.

A big thank you to Anthony and Kaylene for sharing your knowledge, stories and culture with us.

Last week, our Sunshine Coast teams including AOD youth, Breakthrough for Families and headspace Caloundra proudly took part in National Reconciliation Week events across the region. ❤️💛🖤

The teams joined the Aunty Betty Walk, an annual community celebration to connect with Kabi Kabi First Nation’s cultural heritage through traditional dance, music and a guided walk with Traditional Custodians, paying tribute to the life and work of the much loved Aunty Betty McMahon (Some of the headspace team are pictured with Mayor Rosanna Natoli.)

They also attended the Dreaming Collective Reconciliation Breakfast - with a heartwarming Welcome to Country by Uncle Lyndon Davis and an encouraging keynote address by Natalie Williams - a descendant of Aunty Betty.

Sharing that room with 140 guests, including community Elders, was a beautiful reminder of why being All In as Allies for reconciliation matters and what it truly looks like in action.

Every year on 3 June we celebrate Mabo Day, which commemorates the life of Eddie Koiki Mabo and marks the anniversary of the historic 1992 Mabo decision.

Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander man who challenged the claim that his family’s traditional land was owned by the Crown. The High Court’s decision in Mabo v Queensland (No 2) overturned that claim and set a precedent in Australian law for the recognition of Indigenous custodianship over their traditional land.

The decision also overturned the colonial concept of terra nullius, Latin for ‘nobody’s land’. At the time of European settlement of Australia, terra nullius was used to justify the British Crown’s claim on the land - as though it was previously unoccupied territory.

The Mabo decision was a watershed moment in Australian history. In addition to overturning a long-held colonial myth, it paved the way for subsequent native title claims. The Australian Parliament passed the Native Title Act 1993 the following year.

Sadly, Eddie Mabo died several months before the decision was handed down, though his legacy lives on.

“Addiction for me started when I was 15…”

15 is an age often filled with simple moments—running through fields, enjoying the sunshine, and be a teenager.

But for this client, it marked the beginning of a reliance on substances.

“...by the time I was a teenager, my anxiety and panic attacks had progressed to the point I was sometimes unable to stay conscious… one time my sister thought I were dead.”

For years, alcohol became a way to cope.
“I noticed drinking would ease some of the physical symptoms...”

The decision to stop wasn’t easy.
“… it was one of the most difficult decisions I ever made.”

Recovery has taken time, effort, and deep self-reflection.
“Rehab was a lot of work… we did a lot of cognitive behavioural therapy resulting in acceptance and minimisation of blame through strength of purpose.”

Step by step, things are changing.
“I am studying, exercising, eating, sleeping… I now feel I can do the sort of things regular people do….”

“I would not have been able to do as well as I have… without the support of Carinya, staff and the program.”

Today is National Sorry Day, 26 May.

The theme for this year is From Sorry to Action. The call is clear, we must move from words to action, and this needs to happen now, not in another decade.

Acknowledging past harm is important, but acting to address it is critical. Sorry signals compassion, action delivers justice.

Visit healingfoundation.org.au to learn how you can support Stolen Generations survivors' right for justice and action.
